I believe the carb on the left is a 48 which I want to try. It does not have the grooves shown by the red arrow that my 97 does. Question: Do I need a gasket with a slot in it? The old gasket did not, nor does my 97 gasket. I would also like to use my 97 top as it has the choke set up for my truck if possible but I'm guessing there may be differences. Thanks.

  2. Look for the Venturi size, cast in the small circle on the outside of the right Venturi housing. If it's 1&1/32 it's a 48, if it's 31/32 it's a 97. The gasket does not have a slot in either.

The 48 and 97 are the same in that area...I believe your carb on the left is a model 40, used in 1934 and on some early 1935's before they switched to the 48. Same venturi and jet sizes but different at that point. Do you have the two lids to picture the difference there?? I know they are different in that area but not sure of details, as I have owned only bits of Model 40's.

The 40 and the 48 have different part numbers for both the main body and the airhorn castings. Unfortunately, if I have the drawings, they are on 500 foot rolls of microfilm.

But to answer the question posed by the OP; the 40, the 48, and the 97 ALL use the same airhorn gasket.

Thanks for the replies. It does have 181/32 on the side. Unfortunately both carbs are back together now so no photos of the top inside, though I did look and they were different. Next time I take it apart I'll snap a pic. It was supposedly from a 1936 large truck.
