    Good morning my friends...
I have a Nicson 216cui intake that I plan to install on a Chevy 261cui. I currently have a set of Carter W-1s and WA-1s. I've been hearing about Zeniths and Stromberg 97s and I'm not educated on the differences. I'm looking for looks and some pep on the engine. The Zeniths are pretty pricey at $725 but I have a friend that likes them. They do look slick. The 97s have been catching my eye but do they fit on a 216cui Nicson intake? Thanks. 1470323346653.jpg

Strombergs have two throats, so you would need an adapter. And it would be like cramming twice the fuel and flow into the same small space. Isn't there another single throat carb out there that would be more easily adaptable?

Zeniths, carters, and rochesters will fit. I heard using 2 stock 216 rochesters works well. My buddy ran 2 97's by using 2 to 3 bolt adapters on a 235 .040 jets and 74 power valves.

Everybody has a favorite Chevy 6 carb for dual intakes .... mine is the Rochester "B" for ease of tuning. The carb of choice in the old days was the BXOV-2 Stromberg or the Zenith 28 or 228.

You have pictured a Carter W-1 sitting on the manifold, and it APPEARS that the mounting bolt holes are the same. This would mean the manifold is drilled for an S.A.E. size 2 carburetor:

    http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carbshop_carbsizesandCFM.htm

There are LOTs of 1-barrel S.A.E. size 2 carburetors:

Carter W-1, WA-1, BBS (some), BBR-1, AS (some)
    Holley 847-F, 847-FS, 1904 (some), 1908 (some), 1920 (some)
    Rochester B (some), M (some)
    Stromberg (1 barrels ending with a 2 eg BXV-2, AX-2, EX-2, etc)
    Zenith (most 1 barrels ending with a 10 eg 23AV10, 28BV10, 228AV10)

Pick the brand you are most familiar with (or wish to become the most familiar with) and then start determining the internal venturi size you wish; and asking about the availability of modification parts for your choice.

As stated in one of the links above, you will find the EASIEST carbs to use are either:

    (A) those carbs with a mechanical power enrichment system

    OR

    (B) carbs with a vacuum power enrichment system DESIGNED to be run as a pair.

Do your homework, and you will be happy with the results.

But remember that regardless of what carburetors you opt to use, simply adding dual carbs alone is not going to add much without also changing the camshaft and the exhaust; and also that the best thing to say for the cylinder head on this engine is that it is air-flow challanged.

Some head flow experts that I have gobs of respect for their talents have worked with the head and ending up making it worse, and they admit it.

  6. Tagging on to carbking- what head are you running? 261's really like the 848 head :D

Carbking has provided a wealth of information! I was told by the machine shop to stick with the stock head. I have a 848 head but they told me that the clearance between the valve and the internal combustion chamber was very tight.

I just got a pair of Zenith er4-16's. Is this the same as a 228?

I just sold a pair of Stromberg one barrels for a 216 dual intake. A few years back, I had 7 NOS Zenith carbs for the 216. I also had a set of Carters. I'm sticking with my single Rochester. If I want more "pep", I'll drop in a V8.

Hi Jon, I have picked up three Zeniths. They all have different tag numbers and I feel they will not work for my Type B manifold (Nicson) set up. But, I will call you tomorrow, Tuesday, to confirm. Thanks

Hi Jon, I have been attempting to call your shop this morning but it keeps ringing busy. Are you open today? Thanks
