Technical stromberg 97 question

Hi guys I hope I have posted this in the correct place?
I have just cleaned & replace the gaskets in my two 97's and have run into some trouble.
They ran straight away, BUT there's fuel leaking(dripping)from both,
out of the lower brass screw caps on the bottom of the main body of the carburetors.
I did replace the washers on all of the screws ?
Is there something I have over seen?
Any help would be great guys.

Are they tight?
Run a file on the flat. Might have picked up a burr when cleaning.
Is it a good kit? You get what you pay for the cheap ones have*****ty gaskets. Did they look like the one you took out.

I had a similar problem with mine. I lowered the floats, and that was the problem. I have a dual carb(progressive linkage) on a Model B engine, and runs fine with the floats lower, don't starve the engine.

 

Yes they were tight and they look the same as the original ones I removed.
I got the kits from a early ford parts dealer not sure what brand there were?

 

I set the floats to the hight of the carbord tool they supplied.
But even with the floats high shouldn't those gaskets seal?

 

Take a look at the sealing surface of the brass plugs to make certain there are no burrs.

And no offense meant to you or anyone else. But some feel it is necessary to remove the main metering jets using a pair of needle-nosed pliers, as they were to frugal to purchase the correct double-D tool to properly remove the jets. The tapered jaws can create a burr on the body, which can cause the gaskets not to seal.

Needle-nosed pliers are medical tools that were designed to remove needles that someone foolishly inserted in their nose; NOT to remove main metering jets from Stromberg 97's!

My guess would be proper double-D tools would be available from Uncle Max,*****ster, and probably others.

I use a counterbore tool with a special pilot to spotface the gasket surfaces. It helps when some of them aren't square or if they're pitted.

Do you think it is just poor quality seals or may be a poor sealing surface.
29 Speedster said earlier that his float levels where to high in saying that when I did put the kits into my carb's the float levels were much lower than they are now as I set them to the hight specified in the kit.

I would send your carb bodies to max to get spot faced and use his nylon washers. No leaks.

 

Uncle Max rebuilt my 97's a couple of months ago. He's the best. Don't pass up his offer.

 

Thanks guys I will take up Uncle Max on his offer sounds like he really knows his stuff.
If the shipping wasn't so darn expensive I would have shipped them over to be sorted.
