Make sure the throttle rod is on the same ball S or W on both..Just because they're new, you still need to tune them in to "your engine". I'm a believer in jet adjusters rather then swapping jets till you get the correct one..I believe that the .065 stock power valve will work just fine. Check and recheck the throttle plates to make sure they are closed. Now you can start your tuning, ie, idle adjustment and air/fuel mixture.. Now, why did your old ones leak???????? Shouldn't have if rebuilt correctly.. Have FUN.. Duane.
As soon as I got back from Hawaii, I got back on the coupe. Turned out one of the carbs was damaged in shipping. The throttle mixture screws on one carb were tweaked and essentially blocking out the idle circuit... Hence, the odd behavior. I'll prolly do a post on my whole experience - A Hack Tackles Strombergs. I tell ya what though, I'm seriously impressed with how much improved the throttle response is with the new Strombergs over my original rebuilt jobs... My car has always been fairly quick for a flathead car, but the damn thing screams now!
That's great, glad you got it running. The new 97s come with a idle management that is better then the old ones except the "bat wing", "V" that has the same system. Look inside the old V base and you'll see two little brass tubes, this is what the new ones copied, (not the brass tube, the way they were designed),..Most people want the "D" base because they don't understand the difference. Old 97s can be rebuilt to run just like the new ones.. Duane.
I'm a hack and I'm trying to get 8 97's to run together on a Hemi right now. It could possibly end my desire to work on anything ever again.
I agree the rebuilt strom 97's I have work fabulously on my pickup. One thing to know about adjustments with the unisys. A straight line linkage will not work. An adjustable 2x2 progressive setup is needed. You can't simply turn the air adjustments on the carbs to achieve syncronization. You need to adjust the linkage to get them close at idle. The rear carb inherently wants to pull more vacuum on a Thicksun PM 7. At least thats what i saw on the PM7 intake on my Coupe.
Great posts here! Dad and I have been having the same problems getting our flathead to run with 2 original Stromberg 97's that we re-built.
Duane - That simply isn't true. The new Strombergs have done away with the 3rd squirter. The bases are essentially the same as the old EE1 "D" bases now.
Sounds like me trying to get my damn supercharged flathead to run on two old carbs that run great by themselves ! Just not together
Gents... I have two of the dreaded 48's on my Offy manifold. I rebuilt them and and installed them seperately on the stock manifold. After getting one to idle and behave I swapped it with the other...put the Offy back on with the 48's reinstalled and fired it up. Worked for me...
