Are the Stromberg 97 and Big 97 physically the same size? My Weiand manifold currently has the standard 97s on it and I’m wanting to upgrade to the big 97s but there really isn’t much extra room between them. This Hemi is pretty spicy and I’m thinking it’s going to perform better with a little more flow. It’s scheduled to go on the dyno in late January and I need to have things ready to go by then.
i believe they are the same size, these are big ones, i can compare them to the 81's i have on my dodge weiand 4x2 when i get home.
IIRC, the carburetors are physically the same outside dimensions, but the difference is internal. contact Max Musgrove as he is the Stromberg Guru as well as a dealer for the new Stromberg carburetors. " info @ 97express.com"
Have a triple Stromberg intake coming from the USA, have not played with any Stromberg for 50 yrs......so am curious about the differences between the two standard sized versions and the Big Stromberg.........as I intend to run the triple setup with a progressive linkage is it possible or even worthwhile to run a Big Stromberg on the centre with the standard sized carbs at either end?..........whilst print magazines are pretty much dead, were there or are there any reviews comparing the two "brands" of repo Strombergs available as there is quite a difference in the price.......here in Oz the Genuine Strombergs are over twice the price of the others.........any info would be gratefully receieved........the intended engine is a mild newly built 318 Poly.........thanks.......andyd
Factory Pontiac 389” engines did the opposite of what you mentioned. Smaller in the middle and larger on the ends. A smaller carb in the center when used with progressive linkage gave great torque because of the venturi velocity being better with smaller carbs.
Hey @andydodge is your new intake an Edelbrock or Weiand? Inquisitive Poly minds need to know. I am currently running one of the new large 97's on the 401 Nailhead in my new coupe and seems to be OK. After I get a few gremlins sorted I'll sort out the other two regular 97's on each end of the manifold and the linkage to suit. And for the OP, I replaced an OG 97 with the larger new version with no problems.
Swifty......just the guy I wanna talk to......lol........the intake is a 2nd hand Edelbrock P600, looks o/k from the pics I saw........any chance I could phone you?........email your number to my email, scaleautomobilia@yahoo.com as I've a few questions.....lol.......regards, Andy Douglas
IMO, and that of others, pay the price and get the Stromberg carburetors from England, through USA distributors. The much less expensive knock off carburetors are made in China. Do I have to say more.
I'm with Nick . . . stick with Clive and the Genuine Strombergs. The Big 97's flow 250 cfm (versus 162 or so with the regular 97's). I have no idea as to the specs on your engine, but it would sure seem that the larger carbs would make more top-end power . . . the question is whether or not they hurt low-end power. My guess is that you'd probably be just fine with 4 of them. Heck, worth a try! LOL
I'm in the same boat but only 40 years for me. I was at an estate sale a couple weeks ago and picked up 2 milk crates full of 97s. I had bought a couple repops for my banger build now I've got about 50 originals to sort through for the build.
My 1st car at 15yrs of age was a 1938 Frod Standard sedan..........can't remember if I even touched the carby, it was driveable but after working out what I had actually bought as 1938 Standard Frods were thin on the ground I sold it & saw the light & bought a 1940 Dodge Coupe.................and its been downhill ever since......lol.......so it was actually 54yrs ago lol...........andyd
