Technical STROMBERG 97 VS CHINA 97 PROBLEM..

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by 2FORCEFULL, Mar 6, 2024.

  1. That is totally disgusting! It is one thing to make your own version of something - an entirely different thing to copy the packaging and "attempt" to confuse/trick the customer into thinking they're buying the "real product". I hate this sort of deceptive copy/clone type of crap.

    29A-V8 and 2FORCEFULL like this.
  2. Another thing to note, with today's fuels you typically will not have insulator "coloring" like back in the day. I do not see the nice ole' chocolate coloring we were used to looking for. If you're really trying to figure out how to jet the carbs, then install an O2 bung about 30" back from the block (making sure there are no possible air/gasket leaks), and use an O2 meter. Then you can be on the road - watch the readings and determine where you are at.

With Stromberg 97's, you'll usually find them to run a bit rich under heavy load with the right jets - like around 12:1 or 12.5 to 1 (at the most). These carbs are super simple, they don't have a bunch of different circuits, air bleeds, etc - so one finds that tuning them is always a compromise . . . and if you're going to compromise, be on the rich side of things.

thanks again for chiming in, I love your knowledge and advise... getting to the plugs, I got 3 sets all advertised with out the R... but all came with the R , gotta get time to hit up the local auto parts...and for the reading of the plug... the strap shows not enough advance.... and there's no fire ring on the plug.. so when I get time I'll probley drop to 41's and run the timing light to see where it's at.... seems like it was @22 degree's??? maybe go to 24.... going slow with that because of the 6 volt starter... I probley have north of 100k worth of snap on diag. stuff at the shop.... so once I get it close, I own a muffler/fab shop and the exhaust is split 1&2.....3&4 so I'll put 2 bungs, one each side and do the final test... thats when I will test also for the power valve,.. but on the road test I've only gone 1/2 throttle...with out the o2 reading... pretty tough to check power valves..... I wonder how the hell I ever jetted and did the power valves on my FED w/ 3 2's but I kinda remember blocking them off... the digger had a trans brake so it would leave the line around 4k rpms. and lift the frt. tires out of the lights...also I kina remember running staggered jets with smaller in the middle carb.....senior life is fun,..forget alot....anyway,... thanks a million,... enjoy...

  5. What is the part number of the plug you are running?

sorry, didn't see your post it was in the middle of the quote... but yes, it is rich as there is no fire ring on the porcelain... as it gets closer to lean it will burn a ring around the porcelain....you want it about 1/8 from the deep end...
