Hi fellas. I have been having an issue with my stromberg WW carb. Running VERY rich, and in looking through my shop manual, it seems to be missing some springs in the accelerator pump. Carb is a swap meet carb, and wondering if anyone is familiar with this style, and steer me towards a proper replacement. It’s on a 1955 dodge C-1 truck, 241 polysphere engine (v8), marked Stromberg Bendix, it’s a WW, and stamped 3-145 on top. Thanks for the help!!!

    Really an excellent carburetor!

Missing accelerator pump springs will NOT cause an overrich condition.

If you are certain the ignition is in good shape (poor ignition will not fire all the fuel and can cause the engine to run rich) why not take the carb apart and repair it?

Generally, the worst thing to go wrong with one of the WW series is the aluminum throttle body will wear, requiring bushing (but that causes lean running, not rich). Possible the float has sunk, or out of adjustment, or defective fuel valve. What are you using for a fuel pump? The Strombergs don't like much more than 5 psi.

If a swap meet carb, could be other internal issues, but you won't know until you disassemble.

Dang, Jon, I looked at this earlier and thought about posting the link to your site. I rebuilt a number of those carbs way back when and they usually don't give much trouble.

Aussies have a soft spot for the WW carb... for a while, it was our local V8 go-to carb. I also have a soft spot for Dodge trucks.

I have the Bendix manual for the '55 Dodge truck, which shows operation and adjustment. PM me if you need a copy Chiefpontiac77.

    Cheers,

Hi guys. Thanks for the response. I have s shop manual for the truck, and it seems what may be missing (?) is a small spring above the inlet check ball to hold slight pressure on the ball to prevent too much fuel. Also, the accelerator pump linkage doesn’t seem to do much, aside from allowing it to travel upwards an eighth inch or so. Anyone know where you could by a kit including springs and all that? Thanks again.

  7. I bought and tore apart about 30 of those things a couple years ago to assemble 6 identical ones for my Mysterion clone. I am pretty sure your problem must be mismatch of pump pressure with the carb float setup. Not much else could cause that.. The accelerator pumps are not positive displacement. The lever positively lifts the piston but only the light spring pressure actuates the squirter when the throttle is depressed.

Chief - there is no spring above the pump inlet check valve on this particular WW. Don't be fooled by generic diagrams. Use the diagram along with the Master Parts Book for the bill-of-material for the specific carb. Once you figure out what you need, we probably have it.

Guys.... I just want to thank all of you for taking the time to read and send me info on the carb, and how to set it up. Carbking is right, I had no spring on this one, so it’s off now, and on the bench for tear down. Keep ya posted.
