The company was put into administration a week or so before easter. Hopefully some one will buy the company and carry on producing the highly engineered "new" Stromgberg 97. Perhaps this may not the best time to be trying to relaunch the company again and sell this product though, as the launch of the reproduction 97 from Speedway is imminent. These are believed to be a lot cheaper. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ Built without compromise by the more luck than judgement method. <!-- / sig --><!-- edit note --><HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1>Last edited by jazz age rodder : Today at 05:54 PM. <!-- / edit note --></TD></TR><TR><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid"> </TD><TD class=alt1 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid" align=right><!-- controls --> <!-- / controls --></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- post 52388 popup menu --> <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=4 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=thead>jazz age rodder</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vbmenu_option>View Public Profile</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vbmenu_option>Send a private message to jazz age rodder</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vbmenu_option>Find More Posts by jazz age rodder</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> <!-- / post 52388 popup menu --><!-- / close content container --><!-- / post #52388 --><!-- post #52397 --><!-- open content container --><!-- this is not the last post shown on the page --><TABLE class=tborder id=post52397 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=thead style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 1px solid; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid"><!-- status icon and date --> Today, 05:45 PM <!-- / status icon and date --></TD><TD class=thead style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 1px solid; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid" align=right> #2 </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 0px solid" width=175>Jonny69<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_52397", true); </SCRIPT> Non member Join Date: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,122 </TD><TD class=alt1 id=td_post_52397 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid"><!-- icon and title --> <HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Bah it's a shame it never worked out because a lot of work went into that and from what I've read they were a good product. From many many comments on the HAMB they were too expensive so I can't help feeling that because they are made over here (I'm led to believe) the strength of the pound just put these out of reach for 95% of his market. Bad time for anything made over here selling in the US I guess. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ Intro|Website|Ride <!-- / sig --></TD></TR><TR><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid"> </TD><TD class=alt1 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid" align=right><!-- controls --> <!-- / controls --></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- post 52397 popup menu --><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=4 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=thead>Jonny69</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vbmenu_option>View Public Profile</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vbmenu_option>Send a private message to Jonny69</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vbmenu_option>Find More Posts by Jonny69</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> <!-- / post 52397 popup menu --> <!-- / close content container --><!-- / post #52397 --><!-- post #52419 --><!-- open content container --><TABLE class=tborder id=post52419 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=thead style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 1px solid; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid"><!-- status icon and date --> Today, 06:37 PM <!-- / status icon and date --></TD><TD class=thead style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 1px solid; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 1px solid" align=right> #3 </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #d1d1e1 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #d1d1e1 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d1d1e1 0px solid" width=175>langy<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_52419", true); </SCRIPT> Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Posts: 7,301 </TD><TD class=alt1 id=td_post_52419 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d1d1e1 1px solid"><!-- icon and title --> <HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Can't say i'm surprised really, the product was/is too expensive. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ . I'm not surprised in the least. They bit off way more than they could chew and just never caught up. I know a couple people who will likely try to bring it to the US.
I had a friend who restored Midgets with Offys in them and they utilized Riley carbs. They were rare as hens teeth. He hired a pattern maker and actually did a production run of about a hundred or so. Ray Oldenburg was his name "RIP" This man actually made and sold Riley carb repops. I was amazed by his fortitude in doing this. I wonder if anyone on here bought some of his carbs? They had all Stromberg internals,just like the originals.After all was said and done,he broke even. He had a few carbs for himself and sold the rest in about 2 weeks.
They are no longer able to trade, Eddie is trying to sort it out , all done behind his back apparently (partnerships hardly ever work out ,Nuff Said !) Eddie Wimble who hand built every carb is trying to sort out the mess but as it stands has lost everything except a huge debt .
Is this just a row between Clive & Eddie? Thought a solution was in the works... Shame - beautiful product, if a bit pricey. Still, the availability of quality replacement parts more than made up for it.
Clive closed it down !! make of that what you like, Eddie found out too late ,it looks to be done & dusted . Really bad news , brilliant Carbs I run 3 on my Daimler Hemi Roadster no problem from day 1.
I just got one (#1216) From So-Cal and am installing it on a banger. I figured that the price would shoot to $575 based on the weak dollar and strong Euro. Based on core charges and rebuilt prices from guys like Jere Jobe, I figured $475 was a fair price.
Clive at Stromberg has asked me to post this on his behalf (he cant access the HAMB for some technical reason). Hi everyone. While I have no intention of entering into any discussion on the rights and wrongs of this situation, I would like to make a couple of comments. Firstly, whatever our allegiances and friendships, it does none of us any justice to spread rumors without the full facts. Nor to attempt to damage Stromberg company goodwill going forward. Administration is not like bankruptcy. More like Chapter 11. Basically, the partners had seriously fallen out and without a resolution, the company was in danger. Next, I'd like to thank all those who took the time to comment on the carb's excellent performance. I believe it gives superb value for money at a recommended retail of $449. But then I would! Finally, as always, there are two sides to every story. This situation was absolutely the last resort and it was not, as some have suggested, carried on behind anyone's back. Those of you who know me personally can make up your own minds. I am not about to get into any slanging match on this or any forum. And this will be my last post on this subject. Stromberg Carburetor will continue as a company with new vigor dealers will be officially informed any day now. And the product is brilliant. So let's look forward to the future. Thanks for listening. Clive Prew Stromberg Carburetor
well, there you go. speculation is just that, speculation. glad things look like they're going to work out.
Glad to hear it. Seems like a stand up guy and I agree it is useless to continue to spread rumors. Good luck with the company going forward.
Thats good that the company is continuing forward, I really would have hated for "Speedy" to have become involved with their reproduction as someone else mentioned. Strombergs made and assembled in a country by 4 year old kids would not have been a good climax to a product that Clive has obviously taken to a much higher standard of quality!
You can believe what you want, but the NEW Strombergs still have faults that need to be worked out. I know many people who would rather rebuild and run an original then run the "headaches" associated with the new carbs. There is a guy in Orange County (I don't have premission to name him) that helped with the development in offering new NOS parts to use and then checking the new castings, he said "they still aren't perfect".... this lead me to believe that with asking $450 for a non-perfect product and having constant "back order" problems with everyone I know.... IT IS NO SURPISE THE COMPANY FAILED TO PERFORM!!!
I've Known Clive for years, from the good old days of the Pre 50 AAC back in england, He's one of the few truly good people that you meet rarely in life.
I think one of the bigger problems was in getting them on the shelves... If they are not in any store than you are missing out on sales. I can't count how many times people have popped up on the various forums saying " anybody know where to get a new 97? Everywhere I checked, They are all sold out/back ordered"... The price wasn't high enough to let them stand on the shelves unsold. Keeping up with the demand seemed to be more of a problem. I'm not sure if that was a manufacturing problem or not but there has never been enough on the market or on the shelves, Always back ordered or temporarily out of stock.. .
The only flaw I had was with the floats, which after mentioning it on the Hamb I recieved a pm from (Side Valve) Mike at the Hot Rod Company he then contacted Clive who put 4 new floats in a box and mailed them right out to me, the biggest kicker is I bought them from someone else on the Hamb but Mike ultimatley stepped up and took care of a problem that wasn't even his, that certainly goes a long way in my book and therefore any business I can throw at The Hot Rod Company will surely be done.
We sold a lot of carbs & had 1 problem with a jet cover not sealing due to a jet not installed all the way, EASY correction tighten the jet & the cover tightens up, job done. The runability is not an issue ( we all know the old float issue, now corrected) The last 2 I got went to Taylor Engines in Whittier ( since 1950) They are bolted to an Eddie Meyer equipped Flathead in an original 32 Roadster, on Taylors running engine stand & they performed faultlessly. That's the first time Jay had used them , he was impressed. Eddie was having problems getting parts to build the carbs , no parts=no carbs.There are 2 sides to every story, I'm sure in time we will all know the truth. I just hope the 97's come back .
I sure wish that I would have committed to a pair but sounds like it's too late now... Same old story, A day late and a Dollar short .
