The motor, B banger , header, 7-1 comp head... what jets would you start with???
I started with the 45's ran fat... went to 43's, still fat low and mid....
should I drop to 41's???? anyone run that small??? I'd like to be done here someday...

I won't run with the little chrome louvered one, so I got a 8''round 4'' tall one,... but it runs the same with or with out....

also,.. I took the top of the carb off to make sure the float wasn't too high....

I think you'd be surprised by the air flow differences when measured with something repeatable. Not just butt dyno.

I'm currently working on a video with a o2 sensor and air/fuel gauge that illustrates the issue better.

I had issues with too much fuel running the 45 jets. Added a port for afr gauge and down to 33 and it runs really well. I have other things going on with cam and special head that maybe contributing to the need for smaller jets.

Totally agree. Dispelled some old wives' tails that tend to be spewed amongst some of the banger crowd.

so your at 33 jets???? when I got the motor, it had a C head, jets indexed to 65..looked like a diesel roll'n coal when you lay'd into the throttle.. I got so much going on, lost a good 6 mo. with the hand and elbo surgery's ..
my question,... that you answered pretty well, Is the 41's way too low.. I like your answer because you did it.... not a friend I know said his buddy knows aguy that had a friend tell him

I am Matt of Seattle Speed Shop.

What I mean is, even though you can't feel the difference in the "seat of your pants", I bet there is a significant difference in air fuel ratio between with or without air cleaner.

I also think it's worth noting that an 81 comes with .035 jets from the factory. I'd definitely try out .041 jets if I was in your shoes. Probably even go smaller.

been watching your you tube,... I like how you just throw all those hard to get parts up on the table,,, makes me wanna try to reach in the screen and grap stuff..
one of your videos says you run a B banger 7-1 head, and a single 97.... what jets do you run????

more what I ment was the little air cleaner would make it lay down on the big end where as with the big air clean not much difference.. how I know this I ran it through the gears hard a couple times, and on the third, the filter blew off, did a couple more passes and didn't "seat of the pants notice a differance"

I'd like to find a good tail pipe sniffer afr meter... kinda don't wanna go welding bungs in the header... tuners of model a's got them to run pretty damn good with out IMHO... that and having a hard time finding pre 64 bungs that aren't from china..

Hey! Thanks for watching! I still run .045 jets in mine.

But, it should be noted, I am at barely above sea level and in the Pacific Northwest. Our air is much denser here. If i remember correctly Las Vegas is around 2000ft? I'd just keep stepping down jets till the plugs look happy. Maybe even try an 81.

The car we are tuning for the video, was from Texas, and is having issues up here with the weather change.

I'm definitely a believer in reading the plugs over anything... But the AFR gauge is helpful for showing the changes made on video. I do not think you need one, to solve your problem.

question, isn't a 97 designed for a flathead v8 with 45 jets?? and at first I was worryed that going to 41's I be lean... but reading this, I need to get even smaller jets???

lol.... I was trying to just jump off the ladder and not have to do the steps... but know ing of someone running 33's made me re think the process... I've got 41's thats the smallest i got... gonna put them in and order more smaller ones and keep doing the steps I guess

Just curious! My buddy is running a b motor with a Winfield 7-1 comp head with a Stromberg 97 with 041 jets and 71 power valves and an electric fuel pump at 2psi. He seems happy with this set up.On my A motor I have a Police head 5.22-1 compression with a Stromberg 81 with 035 jets and a 71 power valve and a electric fuel pump at 1 1/2 psi.. No issues. Did you check your float levels

float level was the first thing I checked...I put the 41's in,... she seems real close to where i can tune other things... I need to get a plug reading....and check timing... O ne of the things that happened was when I put the 41's in,... the idle went way up.... I think the other jets were so big that the idle was up enought to get in the mid circuit ... with the new jets I truned down the idle and she runs real smooth now compared to the vibration it had before... run it through the gears, no lean pop...

my rpu runs way to good to even look at the motor....it has a winfield head... but no idea the comp ratio... IMG_2795[8817].jpg IMG_2796[8816].jpg IMG_2890[8840].jpg IMG_2894[8836].jpg IMG_2898[8832].jpg
