Stuck in 3rd, wheels won't roll

The 2-3 fork and syncro hub show signs of serious HEAT that is why they look black . Were you running down the road forcing the shift lever one way of the other? F&J is right on about 1-R fork being in a gear,move it to the rear about 1/2 of its' travel and see if 2-3 won't then move.

The obvious problem I see is the loose bronze ring that has come undone from the rear side of the synchro hub. You also say that the large fork on the shift tower won't move back and forth....did you mean while mounted to the gearbox? If so, that would make sense. If it won't move while on the workbench, you may also have a problem with the shift detents.

Your trans definitely needs to be dis***embled and overhauled, based simply on the synchro issue.

 

Thanks for the response. Messed with the tower last night (on the bench) and it moves to all four positions. When it was on, it would not shift out of third. Yep, a rebuild in my future. Thanks again.

 

Remove the trans cover as suggested,......It's sounding like 2 gears at same time..... Those are pretty easy trannies to deal with.

Scotch block the front wheels, jack up one rear wheel. Under the hood on the steering column at the shift levers raise the lower one up a notch, then lower the upper one a notch. Sounds weird but they must both be even to be in neutral.

I think what happen was at some time it ran dry and burned the bushing on 2nd gear.

 

That bit that F&J points out is locking the second gear to the synchro hub, so when you went for high gear it was in both gears at once. That's your whole problem. You need a synchro overhaul kit. The rest of the trans looks good, but can't see all the gears so there may be damage on the hidden sides.

 

I also see what looks like broken teeth, is that correct?
