So far, I have been having a pretty decent time installing my new Rebel Wire harness in my '57 Fairlane. It's been a lot easier than I expected, but I am now, however, completely stuck.

On the '57 Ford steering column, there are 6 wires that run into the switch under the steering wheel. 3 of the wires are green, 1 is blue, 1 is white, and one is orange (or red). The way they are paired up, I am****uming one of the green wires goes with each of the other three colors (see attached picture). [The 7th wire is for the horn and it runs down the center of the column]

I have a '57 Ford shop manual and wiring manual, but nothing specifically breaks down what each wire in the column switch is for. I am officially stuck. Any ideas?

I'm about to just order a universal signal switch and clamp it to the column since this little puppy is 50 years old anyway....

  2. On most wiring kits the white wire goes to the stop light switch, cancelling the turn signals when braking....
As I remember these Ford cars had very little in the way of a fuse block...just some inline fuses? correct?

Yeah, there is basically nothing in terms of the existing Ford fuse block. The old wiring was very brittle, so I ripped all of it out. The head and tail lights, fuel sender, horn and all of that stuff was really easy. This turn signal thing is killing me. I think I might just get a clamp-on aftermarket turn signal switch and be done with it.

I use a tester to see what what on there, this can be a pain. I did a 57 Ford awhile back for one of the guys on here, left the switch in.

But, basically this is the rundown. That is backwards in the pic from how it installs in the car, so...

This is a basic contact switch so we can basically get to the bottom of the wiring by figuring how it works. When you install it, the little nub is facing you on the left hand side. There it connects to the turn signal lever. When you turn the lever down you are engaging the left signal, breaking contact with the bottom most poles and so on and so forth.

Now, this is the hard part as Im terrible with in my mind taking an object, reversing it and moving it 90 degrees, then still seeing the poles in the right spot haha. This might be right or complete wrong.

Id have to GUESS that top row from right to left...left front turn, right rear turn, left rear turn, right front turn. In keeping with the guesswork the green would be flasher power in, and white would be brake light switch in. I need to think about it more. I have done a bunch but use continuity to test it, never just stared at it saying "well if this moves there" haha. Sorry if Im totally backwards!

If your talking about the turnsignal switch for the ford column, it's a mystery, try the http://www.57fordsforever.com/smf/, they might help. i could figure it out went Changed column sleeves a few years back.
I did the easy way out and got one of this add-on turn signal switches, looks like****.
I will be going to a tilt style chevy steering column so will use that switch.

Just by looking at the positions, I would bet the white or green by themselves is brake switch input, the other is flasher input.

Input voltage to either the green or the white. With the switch in the neutral position, 2 of the remaining 4 will be hot. These are to the rear.
The 2 not-hot ones go to the front.
(You're doing this test on the bench, not installed)
If you input voltage to the green for example, and nothing happens, then thats probably the flasher input (switch in neutral position).

Once you're this far, activate the switch to determine R and L, front and rear. Make notes and install.

  7. yea, use a test light and a battery to find out which is which. looks to me like the green is a common power in and the others are going to the components (out).

Concours Parts in Nevada has wiring manuals for 57 Fords. Might be worth the 7.50 it costs.

OK. That gets me a LOT closer now. My only issue now is with the green wires. The stripes have faded off the wires. I traced them all the way back and there's no sign of the white or orange stripe on the green wires. If the switch is installed in the column, it looks like the diagram I have attached below. I noted where I know what Rebel wires correspond. If anyone has any insight (or educated guesses) on corresponding green wires function, please let me know.

The remaining wires should be the stop light switch, left front signal and left rear signal.

On the stock wiring there are 3 green wires, but you look at the pigtail conectors on the green wires to see the other color(white, blue, yellow), not the wire itself. If you cant figure it I know a guy(Peter Leddy), who has a small shop and knows these inside and out. These Fords are what he specializes in, and he has run his shop for years just off of word of mouth. PM me if you want his info.
