I have a '57 Silver Hawk 3 on tree and there's alot of extra movement while shifting. I'm down to the part where I'd be pulling the turn sig wires out of the column. I'm hoping someone has a high res exploded view of what all is in there. I have a lathe and can make bushings since I can't find new parts.
I have a 61 manual transmission steering column, I don't know if my unit would be any better than yours. For what it is worth I have a nice three speed and overdrive transmission that I'd like to sell to. Shipping would take some of the fun out of it...located near Omaha Ne. Use the appropriate part number in virtually any Studebaker vendor's website to get price and availability, good luck
A couple of things to check. the hole in the shift handle that the pin goes through. Is there excess wear there? Then the hole that the ball on the end of the shift handle goes in in the shift tube in the column, is there excessive wear there? You can probably figure out how to put a bushing in the handle where the pin goes through to take up the slack but where the end of the handle goes in the tube may be a challenge.
The guy before me paid $3300 to get the trans rebuilt, so I think I'd p*** on your trans because of shipping expenses. I'm sure my problem must happen to all column shift cars eventually. If you have a dash clock or radio - I'd buy those
I've got a two Hawk radios but neither work, plus they are 58 and 59 so probably not "right". The shipping would be more than they are worth...the downside any "correct" radio will probably need to be rebuilt, the capacitors etc go bad from age (much like us If you are interested in the radios make an offer, you might be surprised how cheap you could get them
The Stude collar is pot metal **** and they all eventually wear and break. That said, I dislike the column shifter so much I've installed Hurst floor shift conversions in every Stude I've owned since 1962. To me, it adds immeasurably to the driving pleasure. jack vines
I dug through my Hawk stuff, I have a 61 Hawk mast with shifter collar and the portion with the actual bearing with the turn signal switch. The bearing has a nice snug fit. If you have concerns for wear in the shifting mechanism I can dis***emble and show you photos. $50 plus the shipping IF you think it looks usable. I have no idea how many miles are on the car. I bought it for the trunk lid and after sending the ch***is to Indiana I'd like to get rid of the smaller parts. Not sure if you have the factory tach. I have one of those also.
Nothing to add other than you can upload the video to YouTube and share it/ embed it here in your post.
