Projects Studebaker Covers on your Chevy - Fix that Belly Button

  1. Good work Scotty!
With that step, how do you "hide" the PCV system? I'm trying to figure this out without creating an oil drinker. Ideas?

Wow! You guys have been busy. Thankyouverymuch!

I have a couple of ideas on the pcv system. I plan on running a performer rpm air gap for dual quads. It has a pretty open valley area, but limited space on top. I think popping a hole in the valley for a grommet or a screw in pcv valve is a no-brainer. The part I am having trouble with is the breather and oil fill without a hole in the valve covers. It would be easy enough to put in another grommet with a snap in breather if there is enough room, but that isn't likely. I may have to fall back on an elbow with a larger hose to the firewall. It could double as an oil fill.

I would like to see some of the moon style add-on breathers for steel valve covers. I have seen a few aluminum breathers on steel covers, but it looks odd to me. Maybe I just need to look at them a bit to see if they grow on me.

  3. I'm trying to think like the guy that got me started on this stuff. How do you hide wires, etc that are normally exposed?
Take a brass ferrule type air brake fitting that uses 3/8 air line, drill out the center of the fitting so you can pass 3/8 steel brake line tubing thru the first step of the modified fitting toward the hidden GM baffle between front left or right rockers. Turn down the pipe thread outside of the air brake fitting and thread to accept SAE thread jam nutswith nitrile o-rings. Pop a hole in the rear of one valve cover, snake the brake tubing thru and support however toward the front of the motor, put an inline PCV valve at the rear of the engine.
Hide the stuff in plain sight. I'm trying to do the same with <<<<<<<<<<<< with it on the engine stand.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<.

  4. I'm not into the faux valve covers, but I don't see this like that at all. They just look better from an asthetics standpoint. Are all the custom guys running "sombreros" trying to trick you into thinking their car is a Caddy? No, they just look better than the stocker beanie hubcaps. I look at this the same way.

I give those three and a half rock ons, Scotty. if "they" don't like 'em, tell 'em to make something nicer and show us what's what. till then, they can shut their wobbly cockholsters.
The secret is to look good doing it. You have pulled it off in spades. on the truck in question, They will fit right in.
    You weirdo.:D

Lux, you crack me up. Glad you're in my corner. Kinda scary, but glad you are.

Brian, I am what you call a dumb ass. You see, a dumb ass is some one that had a 53 champion and sold it. But to truly earn your dumb ass letter on your jacket, you must also sell the motor, tranny and OD for $100 within hours of pulling it out. So I am proud to say that I have lettered twice in Duimb Ass. Catch me some time and I'll show you my straight jacket.

    Scotty!

Keep your hands off my damn valve covers!

    Ya damn parts vampire. lol...

For all the naysayers... out there... I looked at these things first hand and was there for some of the time he was building them. They are CLEAN. A true best of both worlds scenario.

  11. Nice work. I saved a pair of Stude valve covers off my land speed race car project just for some application similar to this. The 259 was all locked up. The rockers are now benfitting an old Caddy engine. Thanks for the ideas and how you did it.

This is NOT trying to make the engine something it is not. Nice work making old style appearance and new performance.

  12. Ditto. Great job.

Well, I started putting my motor together only to discover that I've had the wrong camshaft sitting on the table for six weeks. I sent it back just to be told my correct part won't ship for a month. :( That left me little to do but take some more photos, so here are the shots requested. This time they are in primer. I'll throw up one or two more when I get the intake stuff on it. Might even get a set of those Fenton cast iron headers for this thing, too.

What a great bit of engineering. Looks frigging awesome. Still not clear on a pvc sollution. What I did to get the same look is put a Studebaker in my T project...

How do I put one of those picture under my name. I'm kind of a computer dumb ass.

  19. Oh common lets dredge up some good old drama here.

You sure made a silk purse out of that sows ear. I like it real well myself.
But hell I don't care what you use for a motor and if you can make whatever it is look better more power to ya.

I've peddled every center bolt sbc head I ever got just because I hated the
valve cover choices. These look great and I wouldn't hesitate to do it.
As far as the "fake" controversy, I really loved Nads take on it when I saw
his Packard V-8 wearing script SBC covers...

  21. That's FAKE, they scream STUDEBAKER.

On the other hand, Scotty did a good job and made some interesting and slick covers.

    What's your point?
Scotty did the same thing? (And he did a nice job, too)
There are a couple hundred sets of these steel valve covers running around on Chevy engines.
I just shared a similar experience done slightly different.

  23. His don't have the words STUDEBAKER in big fat letters.

    OK...
You try and buy a set of finned aluminum valve covers that don't say that..
    Your choices are...
    "Offenhauser", or "Studebaker".
There is one other guy that makes them with the word 'Studebaker' in a script type font...
Your snipe is hollow (to me) because the very act of putting the steel (or aluminum) valve cover on a SBC is to 'change' the look.
That in itself is what hot rodding is all about.
Changing 'the look' to something the builder likes.
Belittling the builder (any builder) because of your personal taste in style is bad form.
But... Go ahead and shoot away... Your aim is off.

    Scotty,

Nicely done and functional too. A much better looking cover than the stock center bolt chevy's.

A 1955 265 is cool enough without doing this to the valve covers.

Three observations: One: Most folks looking at your mill when you're out there don't know what they're looking at anyway! Two: It's clever and innovative and more importantly, it's YOUR's! Three: Isn't this what it's all about anyway? Have some fun!

Don't seem like there is really much of anything to object about because a guy wants the valve covers on his STUDEBAKER pickup to say "STUDEBAKER".
Even The Studebaker Corporation put "STUDEBAKER Thunder Bolt 283" on the valve covers of the SBC that they installed in their '65 & '66 models.
