Have a friend of my fathers who's been collecting cars and parts for 50 years. Has a few Studebakers including this one. Not sure of the year. 60? Supposed to have the original factory v8, supercharger with a 4 speed trans in it. Owner says its all original, bought it in Pennsylvania in the 1970's. Still runs and drives. pretty solid shape. He will sell it and I like it because of the supercharger and 4 speed. Any ideas on value with the limited info, can't find anything to really compare it to after searching the net. Thanks.
Hey; Nice car. A good place to start, would be the Studebakers Drivers Club. You will love this thing. SDC is a good resource. Marcus...
The car in the pics is a 61 Studebaker Hawk. By 61, there was only one hawk model. 61 was the first yea for the 4 speed transmission on the floor. Should be 289 engine, 4 bbl and 4 speed. Supercharger is non-stock for a 61 hawk. The 57-58 Golden hawks were available with a supercharger, and the supercharger returned as a factory option for 62-64 GT (gran turismo) Hawks with the supercharged package. That's a nice looking car, nice with th 4 speed- and if someone's added a supercharger- lots of fun to drive! Nice find. I agree with the above advice- check out the SDC webpage, as well as the SDC forum here: http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/ Evan
Thanks for the info. I'll check on the vin. I believe it is the 289 in it, my father says it is a Paxton supercharger. I'll check out that website.
My dad's friend used to have a blue metallic '61 Hawk with a supercharged 289 and 4-speed. I always thought it was original. You're sure the Paxton wasn't available on '61s? It really wasn't that fast, but it was really cool and impressive under the hood.
High school buddy had a new 63 golden hawk. All the good stuff. He was one of the top three evrybody was gunning for. You'll love it.
I'm sure about the supercharger fact. The 57-58 hawks used the McCoullagh(sp?) VS57, and the 63-64 hawks used the Paxton SN60. I was wrong in my initial post- after checking there were NO supercharged hawks in 1962. They're a fun car with that orange Whirly thing under the hood! Evan
What a bad ass coupe, man this is a pretty rare piece, if the $ are right I would jump on that baby if finacially possible. Beautiful white body with red accent, this car rocks. Fargo dude I am impressed with your Studebacker awareness, I really enjoyed learning some of those option offerings, cool to share. ~Sololobo~
Thanks for all the info. One thing I have noticed is that this hood has louvres as you can see in the pictures. They appear original to me and not just stuck on. Every picture I have seen of a 61, the hood has a small chrome piece towards the front and no louvres. Is the hood from a different year? Owner doesn't have a set number in mind for it, he has mentioned somewhere around ten grand. Prices seem to be all over the place for these cars.
Check carefully for rust. What looks like easily repaired floor rust can turn into a big job requiring expensive replacement parts. I ended up selling my 53 Stude (same body) because it was too expensive for me to fix correctly. I did not want a major restoration project at that time. It was a driver at the time. It's very fixable and all the stuff you need is available. Just be aware before you jump in. It's easy to get buried in over your head if it needs major rust repair. That needs to be calculated before a fair price can be calculated.
A couple of weeks ago I was invited to tour a high-end collector's warehouse. All the cars were for sale and all were very expensively restored but one of the interesting cars in the collection was a supercharged '57 Golden Hawk: http://www.coastalcustomautomotive.com/inventory.html As far as I know, it's still there. I sure as hell didn't bring anything home. c
I checked that link to the 57 model. Hood is the same as the white one. Swapped over at some point in its life. Owner of the car has some NOS sheet metal for late 50's Studebakers as well. Has about 40 old cars sitting at his farm, believe most are for sale. Most are hamb friendly.
The supercharged motor was also avalable in the 63/64 Lark and the Avanti. See "Studebaker Racing" on the Studebaker Drivers Club site. The 57/58 supercharger mounted in the front middle of the motor, the hood had to be cut out and a fiberglass piece added for clearance. The 63/64 mounted off to the side. Check out some of the posts on the SDC website about the R-3 Super Larks named "the Plain Brown Wrapper" and the "Stude Tomato" at the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags this year!
