    I think it's a great idea.

At the Stray Kat 500 in Dewey OK every May, they have a biker build-off. They bring in a bunch of junk bicycle parts, a few mig welders, form teams, and let the fun begin. The kids (and geezers as well) love it.

If you're into doing something for the kids, go for it....especially something that get's 'em out of the house, gives 'em camaraderie, and teaches 'em to wrench. And you said you didn't want to teach :D

There was a bike club out off Dallas called the PEDAL-Philes, maybe you can find them and start a chapter!

  19. Just make damned sure you never ever have any physical contact with any of the kids, period.
Hell my neighbor has a girl that's into cars, he's even interested (in his '40s) she wants to come over and help. I had to tell him to suggest that she come over with him or with his better half. He understood and she was just disappointed at first. But kids really like hangin' with dad so it has worked out.

Best thing is to let them do their own thing and help them if you can.

Sounds like a cool idea - but are there THAT many kids in your area who already have modified bikes, or parents/friends with skills to build them? I only ask, because it sounds like you are setting yourself up for a lot of work. I spend a few hours a month just working on my kids' and neighbors' bikes - and they all have stockers. And if you end up being the chief fabricator for the club, you might have to look at ways to cover your ass. "My little Timmy was riding one of those... those... CONTRAPTIONS - when the front wheel fell off of the steering thingie, and now Timmy's in a body-cast for 6 months".

Don't get me wrong, I think the whole concept is cool as hell... just something to think about before you jump in with both feet. Names?

I think what you are doing is great. Bike building is a great "window" in to the do it your self kustom world. Like most hot rodders and customizers as kids we started out either on bikes or models (for me it was both). I LOVE BICYCLES. and still enjoy building them. As a matter of fact since alot of our car club members have lowrider bikes we are starting to take them to shows with our cars and people are digging it. It gives the kids something to look at and go home and "play" around with there bike. Its cool.

I also am the neighborhood mechanic for all the kids and there bikes and skateboards.

Here is my lastest pile of junk parts and donated peices.
