Realized I was going to have to move the front x-mem forward or the body back, so cut out the front x-mem, ground and removed all of the old weld, etc. so I could move it "smoothly". Had the motor/trans in and out about 20 times to measure and fit and finally tacked it in. Forgot to take a bunch of pics, but it's in the right place, got fan clearence front and bottom and minimal firewall interference. I also added steel shims to tilt the top back and fill in on top of the x-mem and ended up with 8* camber with the frame level, figuring that number will drop a bit when the frame is at ride height. The add'l boxing plates will slide in between the rear of the x-mem and the frame, so should be solid when all welded up, but staing with the tacks now so if I need to redo......
I then started on the suspension, first the front. Using a 4" drop axle, Posie's front slider and "46 front rods, split. After f'ing around with clamps etc. I flipped the frame over to get gravity in my favor. I looked at mounting the rods on the outside of the frame, the outside edge of the x-member and the inside edge of the x-mem. Settled on the inside edge to give me the most tire room in a turn. It means the nuts face outwards, but should be hidden under the car. I'm going to add boxing plates on the nut side of the bracket and partially box the x-mem to stiffen that area up. Front spindles are '46, so I'll have to heat and bend the steering arms for clearence. Seems I could go above (if it clears the engine) or below the radius rods. Any thoughts?
Rear suspension next. 8" ford with model A spring over the center, 3* up on the pinion angle. I plan on mounting a front pivot on the radius rods with a torque bar from the discussions here, tube shocks on the back, brackets from Speedway, a panard bar and anti-sway bar if I can figure it out. After starting the mock-up, I got to thinking the A rear arms that I have seem to be a bit wimpy for this combo, so I posted a new thread just for some technical opinions on their structural ability. May have to do an upgrade yearwise to keep this going. If anyone needs some pics or measurements of what I've done so far, let me know. RB
