So I need to put a horn on my '31 coupe and I never would have dreamed it would be this difficult. My car is built with a cutoff of 1955 (yeah, I did put a T5 in it but that's the only thing newer than '55) so I want to stay period. It runs 6V and has a 1940 Deluxe steering wheel and F1 steering box/column. I DON'T want a stock model A horn, so what is the suggested "hot rod" horn choice? Also, how do I wire the dumb thing up if I want to use the stock horn ****on? I ***ume I need a 6V horn relay, right? Yeah, I know these are probably stupid questions but for some reason I'm really hung up on this thing.
    Thanks.

55 and earlier Ford horn and relay. Run the wire through the shaft like Henry did. Piece of cake.

  3. Well I got a Spartan horn in my Willys. I was looking for a stupid horn but that don't make those any more.

The Spartan is a trumpet horn after market, mine is stamped 1957 but it is 6V. There were any number of after market horn companies back then and I don't think that one was any more popular than another. I think for a trad rod if I didn't happen onto anything special that the stock Ford horns from the late '30s were pretty cool.

As far as wiring it up you use a horn relay and if you are lucky it will be marked for you. Basically it has line in and out and your horn ****on makes up a ground that closes the relay.

Sorry I should have been more clear I suppose. I realize that I want a pre-55 horn....what I was hoping to figure out is if there was a specific year/make/model of horn that sounds good on a traditional hot rod. I don't want to sound like a freight train or a Honda civic, so I was hoping someone could chime in on what sounds "right" on a car like mine. Something along the lines of "a 1939 Mercury car horn has the right sound for a hot rod". I've seen the hi/lo pair of horns too.....will those sound right or can I get away with just one of them (hi or lo)? I really don't want a horn so its gonna be hidden....I just don't want it to sound "wrong" if I have to push the ****on.

Thanks for the info porkn******....that clarifies the wiring. I figured it was something simple like that.

  5. '37-'40 Horn sounds hot rod to me. They look good too.

    Sort of like this:

that is definitely a swell lookin' horn.....probably the nicest looking car horn ever made. only problem is finding one that doesn't cost my first born child.

  7. It won't fit your quest for nothing newer then '55 but I think that they repop them cheap enough.

These old horns show up often enough and no one seems to want a lot for a horn yet.

Cool ride, and .. the building. Very cool. That wall is so really close to repairable. It's probably not yours, but if it is .... brick mason ... stat !! I'd hate to see it go. Tis' nice. Honk. Honk.

  9. three terminal early Ford relay. One wire is from a battery + terminal. One wire goes to the SPARTON (hint, hint ******) horn. the other wire goes to the insulated horn switch in the column. Pressing on the horn ****on grounds the relay sending 6 volt to the horn. The long trumpet style Sparton horns look cool in an open engine compartment.

Why not just get some from a salvage yard?
They surely let you test the horn before purchase - Does not sound right, get another.

Up here there are no longer salvages with old cars, thus eBay is the source for me.
Seems they are not tooo expensive to try & fail a couple of times:

Swap meet find for .50. Took apart and cleaned and made new gaskets. Know it is a 6V horn but sure is impressive when run on 12V.

Don't know what it is off.

Mounted on frame just behind front crossmember.
