Stupid HVLP question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Aug 22, 2007.

  1. I'm going to paint with HVLP for the first time and have a kind of dumb question before I start. I'm supposed to run 50 lbs. at the regulator on the gun which will be 10lbs at the air cap.

Is the 50lbs at the requlator what it should read with the trigger on the gun pulled or adjust it to that without the trigger pulled? (told ya it was a dumb question)

I'm not horribly experienced, but from what I know, it should be with the trigger pulled.

You should adjust the regulator with the trigger pulled and then adjust the air volume on the back of the gun. Remember to check the CFM needed by the gun to make sure it's getting enough air. Mine takes about 9 CFM @50psi

  4. Rick,

I have the regulator on the wall set at 90psi and have a small regulator at the gun set to 50psi. I wasn't sure if the 50 psi is with the gun trigger pulled or not.

Like I said,,set the reg at the gun,, with the trigger pulled at 50 psi,,but then use the flow knobs on the gun to get it where you need it to spray right. If you don't have them adjusted correctly, you'll be spraying either to much air or too much paint. I can't tell you what is "too much paint or too much air",,I'm a painting contractor and I've tried to train countless employees how to do this and it seems like I'm the only one that can figure it out. The best advise I can give is ,," It's better to do 3 lite coats than 1 heavy and have to sand it back off". The stuff we spray is alot heavier than auto paints/primers but " Spraying is spraying",,,it's all about the "mix",, air pressure/volume VS viscosity(sp).
