i know i am new here but i have a dumb question. i have been lookin aorund here for awhile and am trying to figure out what era of cars we're dealin with. First of all i know it is traditional rods and kustoms. i get that so don't get me wrong. and i always think of kustoms as 50s and earlier. i guess gettin in the 40s quite a bit. please correct me if i'm wrong. Also every once and awhile i see posts about traditional 60s style. what exactly is this and what cars fall under this category. In my intro i posted i have a 67 fairlane convertible and in no way do i consider my car a musclecar although it is in the heyday of the musclecar era. i also stated that i wanted to bag it and put on big inch wheels (20s or so...definitely not trad). as of lately i want to still bag it but instead go with 14 inch astros and pinstripes whites. i guess this is what i consider 60s style and again please correct me if i'm wrong. also toying with the idea of shavin it but i have all new chrome sittin in the garage for it. i guess i am looking for some clarification. thanks.
jo, just type in the search function "what is a traditional rod" and it will take you back to a thread from hell. No point in lifting that rock again.
MY suggestion: go find yourself about 300/400 or so car magazines from the mid-50's on up and morphing into the 60's. Do not go past 1970. Make sure you get Popular Mechanix, Motor Trend, Hop Up, Hot Rod, Car Craft, (the early) Rod & Custom, Rodding & Restyling and all the east coast small magazines. Read them carefully and study the pictures...sooner or later, you'll see what cars belong to what era...then when you've done that, come back here and explain it to everyone else that doesn't get it!!!Study hard... There was a definite "60's style" as much as there was a definite 50's style and 40's style...narrow whitewalls were one item as were red line tires, emblems removed, metalflake paint and chrome reversed wheels. Astros WERE NOT a '60's item! Why do you want to emulate a certain build style...build your car the way YOU want it, blaze your own trail, start your own fad and to hell with everyone else. R-
"traditional" if true to form would be an exact recreation of a souped up Ford roadster, built by a GI just back from service in about 1947, maybe as late as 1949. all the rest is.. vanity
uh-oh.... Those pictures of the fairlanes dont seem to do your car justice, Jon. Yours is way better looking for some reason... You untraditional fag. I'll let you try my astros on if ya want. Before they make thier way onto my chev... Bag the motherfucker. -J.
thanks for the replies. kinda figured i was lifting an old stone. and i hated even bringin this up but i really didn't know where to start. i just like what you all are doing. i am lovin' the rods and kustoms. they make me want to get my shit done and start an A. i like the idea of blazin' your own trail...and i guess that is whats best. [/ QUOTE ] do what you like and FUCK the rest. to tell you the truth i just haven't seen and 67 fairlanes done up. i saw a rendering of one, but it was all billet wheels, liked it but really not where i wanna go as i stated earlier. i don't want mine to be a stocker and i don't want it to be some knock-off either. i do have a vision in my head and that is basically what i my first post was about. thanks again guys.
Like Stude said, I would get hold of some sixties R&C or early sixties Car Craft for general ideas. Astros, thin whites, bags, Bellflower-pipes, shaved handles and some cleaning up, together with a nice paintjob and interior would make it a great looking cruiser. Just thinking out loud.
scariest ride of my life was in one of those EXACTLY like that yellow one... My sister had one just like it when I was a kid, hers had a 390 in it, black interior, black vinyl top, and was fast as hell...too fast for a redheaded 23 year old chick like her...we were on the way back from Fort Smith, AR, after having our portraits made to give to my grandma and mom and dad for christmas, her friend Roberta was in the back, I was in the passenger seat...my sister decides to pass this car going only 10 MPH over the speed limit...ON A BLIND FREAKIN CURVE on hwy 23 comin' back into Ozark from the interstate, I dont know how fast we were going, but it was hella fast, and the people in the car we passed were pissed off and flying the finger, so I returned the favor, saw the driver's eyes go huge and him go pale... I turned to see a semi-truck's headlights, further to see my sister with some sort of evil grin on her face and hear her make an equally sinister laugh/scream... she pulled back into the right lane in time to miss the truck, who was on the shoulder by now, those bastards in the other car never let off...we missed the truck my inches, and the front of the other car the same... Roberta was hyperventilating, I was shocked and didnt say a word...my sister was still laughing.... I think I have a new subject to bring up this year at thanksgiving, thank you for remindind me....now I have ammo to return fire when she starts bitching about my tattoos... that car got traded for a stupid lil nissan of some kind a few months later, and now sits in an abandoned lot near branch arkansas, as far as I am concerned, it can stay there.....that is one car I dont EVER want to own... good lookin car, I just dont want one, I still feel like shitting my boxers...

[/ QUOTE ] that was basically what i was thinking too. maybe not the bellflowers because i don't think they would look too good. then again i have never seen a 66/67 Fairlane with bellfowers. thanks all for the relpys.
A traditional '67 Fairlane has a 390, a four-speed, mag wheels and (if you're feeling playful) redlines. That is the only way to build one. A Galaxie is a different matter but I'm a hot rodder, so I guess I would feel that way. Do what looks good to you and leave "appropriate" out of it.
I feel ya' on this one John. I stumble over what traditional is around here all the time. I see traditional as a teens to early 30's car w/ a hopped up engine. So what is a 40's rod considered? Post traditional? Pre-kustom? My 56 Vick is dumped, nosed and decked, and has wide whites. I don't think it's "traditional" though. It's a kustom. But what about 60's cars that are pre-muscle, but have kustom cues? Shaved handles, nosing, decking, skinny whites? What the hell is this era of car called? Post-kustom? Pre-muscle? Geez! What a bunch of shit this is. I don't even care. I just know I don't like IROCS or pro-street or pro-touring, or ...
We have a budd, Glen, with a '66 Galaxie lowered over Radir 5-spokes and thin whitewalls. It looks great. I don't have a picture of it, but maybe Jeff does.
