Time for a new speedo cable. What should I use to lube this thing up so that it runs smoothly? The last one I tried screeched for a minute and then quieted down and snapped about 10 minutes later. I have a whole $1.99 invested in this cable so I want to make it last. [IMG]

I squirted bicycle chain lube down my cable before installin it. I think it is a parafin based lubricant.
    Seems to work OK.

Try some powdered graphite, it works great.

There are lubes made specifically for speedo cables.
Any parts store with worn places in the counter top and floor tiles should stock it.

Something between WD-40 & Chain Lube - like maybe LPS #2 would work well. Dry graphite is really the way to go, but unless your inner cable is removeable, hard to ensure you've lubed it thoroughly - also if you don't have a vinyl sheath over the outer cable, the powdered graphite will generate some dust through the cable housing depending on type...

I'm only replacing the inner cable. WD40 is what I used last time- didn't quite do the trick. I guess I'll go get some graphite, unless I can find some speedo lube. Thanks.

The graphite won't harden up if your car sits alot.
Any lube with wax or petroleom base tends to do that.
Graphite is the way to go if you are replacing the cable.
It will last for years without a problem. Works well on
    window channels also.
