If you want to keep that column, and make it look half decent, then you'll want to relocate the switch further up, and make a column support from a flat plate, with an angle at the top to bolt to the dash. Then relocate the switch as high up as you can, and put a cover around the whole thing that meets the support plate.

But by far the best solution is to find a different column that looks like it belongs in the car. The big ugly tilt column screams 70s-90s street rod....which is not what this place is all about.

  2. In the '90s the street rodders around here were s***ching up a Naugahyde cover/wrap. Most of them had a Velcro closer, like a zipper only easier. Problem solved.

What kind of car are you building?
On my '53 Chevy I just wrapped it with a thin sheet of black insulation held on with s couple black zip ties. With black carpet & dash it just disappears.
But if you're building something from the 1930s it shows a lot more and drastic action may be required.

Thanks rockable for the advice. There are two switches that would have to be repositioned the neutral safety switch and the dimmer switch witch also mounts to the column. It is controlled by the turn signal.

It’s these that are in the way. Ignition on top, and lights + horn on the side. The neutral safety is at the bottom, mine is already gone because I have a floor shift.

If I recall correctly, the ABS cover (Speedway?) has a box shape to cover the ignition switch connector, but getting the wiring to it is then difficult, and you’re supposed to shave all other protruding things.

I started looking at making a U shaped cover out of steel, figured I could use the mounting bracket threaded things to bolt it on. Hasn’t made it past the cardboard stage yet though. It seems like it should be possible, and some flat black paint would make it less obvious.

Thanks David for all of your help. I will let you know how I come out on making a cover to fit this column. Wood N One
