There are a couple of advantages of running a return line, one is helping with vapor lock. Circulating fuel doesn't have time to heat up and turn to vapor. The other is full volume. If the engine needs lots of fuel, think racing applications, then sending full volume to carb with a regulator and return line after the carburetor insures full pump capacity to the needle and seat, with the regulator bleeding off the extra pressure sending it back to the tank.
Be sure to use quality steel fuel line, minimum amount of rubber hose, and never ever run a fuel gauge in the interior without a fuel isolator. Also, per NHRA regulations, never mount a fuel system to the firewall. Use modern fuel injection rated rubber hose from a stationary frame to vibrating engine.

Stock engine only need a small electric pump and heavy duty momentary push ****on to prime the carburetor. No need for a lot of extras. A mechanical pump will pull fuel through the electric likes it not even there and the electric will push right through the mechanical. The heavy duty push ****on is to insure it never sticks on and takes some effort to push.
