They are called "suicide knobs" because 1) if they break they can cause you to wreck, 2) if they get caught in your sleeve they can cause you to wreck (this happened to me once and I was lucky to NOT smack into a brick building) and most importantly 3) when you do hit something or someone you have an object attached to your wheel that will punch itself right into your chest.
But they look cool, don't they?

  6. I hate trying to drive a car with one of those damn things. I just forget it's there and bang into it. I gave the last one that was on a car I bought to a guy at work who only has one arm. He thinks it's really great. :)

You can go to a coin shop and buy a nice 1954 coin. They have those machines that smash the pennies, no one gets all crazy over them getting smashed. I like the brake pedal. They have those on a lot of delivery trucks now.

Maybe a little off subject, but a state cop told me he was following this old 48 buick ande the driver had one arm around his woman and the other arm hanging out the door. He kept on following him he had no trouble on curves in the road and was driving good. so finally he pulls the Buick over and he asked the driver how are you steering the car. The driver says with my belly which was a pretty good size. The cop said you gotta use your hands or i'm pulling you over next time .

By the way your '60's ride looks grand enough to cruise the Figure-8 tracks...have you considered competing? :D

An adroit and interesting tale...albeit a mite painful for you. As I have only one leg, do you think they would be of substantive value to me...& ***ist in Speed-Shifting?:D

Here is mine. Not a good angle but the closest picture I have. With a small 12" wheel and no room to work my car is impossible to drive without it. When I was you, driving my Falcon down gravel roads when you hit a good size pot hole they steering wheel would jerk pretty good so I can see sort of where they would be dangerous. Well maybe not dangerous but it would rip the thing out of your hand. It has never happened or remotely come close to happening in my bucket though.

I would get that skate board wheel stuck in my navel (blow hole) and crash and burn.

  16. Nevermind I already posted on this thread.

I probably should mention that there are some real pretty one's in this thread.

  17. I dunno, but if I ever get another car with one on there, I'll send the knob your way and you can try it out. :D

Nice Knob is a funny thing for one man to say to another... haha

On another note... I think, like most interior pieces around the driver, we are so intimate with them that they really stick in the mind. Its the little things.

I picked this up at a flea market today -- a "Gresham Driving Aids" knob ("you too can drive")...
It's well built... ball bearings in the spinner, two pointy screws to grip the wheel in addition to the clamps.
The company was started in 1958 to provide driving aids to the handicapped... they don't offer this model today but they do still offer what they call "spinner knobs."

They may be illegal in Ohio, but I bought one at a local parts store. Is there a rtraditional position for them? ("clock" reference)
