Im getting ready to start the frame and chassis build up on the green bean. Im running a suicide mounted front end and have this question. Should the front spring be on the top or bottom of the spring perch? Or does it matter? I think Ive seen it both ways. please post some pics and your comments thanks Im thinking it goes on top???
I think I would feel better if it were mounted UNDER the perch, but I guess that mounting it on TOP of the perch gives you an additional 1/4 to 1/2" drop or so! I just like the idea of the weight sitting ABOVE the spring, rather than HANGING from the mount! Might be a non-issue, but I've considered suicide fronts, and I'd want to run the spring UNDER the mount!
they can go either way. Alot of the older buckets run with them under but I noticed the new total performance buckets have them on top. shouldnt make a difference excpet to chassis height.
sweet!!! the more I look at my frame and set up. Its set up to mount under.....but Im liking the idea of the top mount...hey GRINDER!!!!! back to work
Drag Link, Here in the Northwest there is a series of Track T roadsters (kind of known as Strode Specials) that are campained on the Golden Wheels Assoc. These are supposedly exhibition races but the competitive nature of the owners comes out and they usually get to be pretty wild. Anyhow these cars run nondropped Ford beam axles with sping mounted over the perch with no problems after several years now.In tis case you have to make sure that the ubolts you use are of THE VERY BEST QUALITY as the entire weight of the car is hanging off these two bolts.Im'm useing this system on the A bone sedan I'm building.I have some very good pics of the frontends on these cars but I never have figured out how to post pics on the board. If you are interested I can email them to you directly Ted
thanks!! send the pics to draglinkscc@cfl.rr.com I cant to start putting this sucka together I got 100.00 bucks itll be on the road before MBL's
Yo dude, pick up this month's issue of Street Rodder, many sweet Ts for your perusal. Sam, you're a dick, but a fucking genius dick!
TACKY!??? No way! They're SEXY - like a primordial clenched claw emerging from behind the axle to support everything in a single thrust of power! Here's mine:
That setup sure looks scary to me. I'm sure with my fat ass in one of these itty bitty rigs, the bolts would fail!
[ QUOTE ] $100 it'll be on the road before MBL's? NO DEAL! That's a sucker's bet! [/ QUOTE ] Do you want us to just send you the money now. It only needs about 20 more trips to Walt's to be finished.
I did mine suicide spring over style, studied it alot before. its lasted over 1200 miles, and on the local ventura crappy roads. I used grade 8 bolts and 1/2 inch thick bar stock. tp aka zibo figure if any thing gives, the axle will rest on the bottom spring mount. (just make sure your oil pan will have clearance)
I wouldn't give it a second thought. Use quality parts and fasteners and do a nice weld job with gussets...sheeeeeeeeit! It'll last forever. Keep in mind most of our 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's rear wheel drive cars had rear axles on top of the leaf springs and I never, ever heard of a u-bolt mysteriously breaking. Once in a greeeeeaaat while, a spring would fail but they were usually old, worn leafs and never ever inspected like we look at our stuff. I'm not gonna stress about it on the Rocky 36. In fact, I believe I'll mount the spring on top of the suicide mount. Really get the nose on the tarmac.
