Hey guys! This should be a fun thread. I got an email from my beautiful bride yesterday asking me if I could help out on her company's luncheon next month. Theme? Summer of '69. I'm all over that! Criteria? Music, dress, sayings, etc! First thing that came to my mind was the infamous saying of Timothy Leary "Turn on, tune in, drop out"! Vietnam was on everyone's mind, as it was esculating with no end in sight! Bright side? Muscle cars were abundant! Give me a '69 Camaro and color me tickled!!! I would love to hear from you guys! I'd say "You guys rock" but it would be more appropriate to say "Right on!" "Far out" and "Keep on truckin!" TIA, Ken
look at the clothes and hair from 1969 and you will be amazed, and it would be hard to go back, just seems so goofy now and we really thought we had the world by the butt then, I was one year back from Nam then and living large then!!!
for me, it was a moustache, bare feet, a surfer blond, my Model A, Newport Beach, surfing, registering for the draft, going to the drags at Lions and Irwindale and nothing but fun
My favorite year.I loved the music..Hendrix,Cream,Led Zep,Airplane.I was in service, but off duty I had bell bottoms, paisley shirt..hot rods were in their prime. You could buy beautiful classy cars new and they were still affordable.I had a wall of the Hot Rod magazine centerfolds.Couldn't put up Playboy centerfolds. Bad part was I made $300 a month. Our country was being torn apart socially so it was the worst of times and the best of times.Despite all the problems,it was my favorite year...hell, I still had hair and a 30 inch waist......
I was 15 and full of piss and vinegar. Dad had just retired as a Senior Master Sergaent in the Air Force w/ 21 yrs. I was raised to not question current politics. You loved your country and your president, no questions asked! LBJ was God and that was the end of that subject!
I was almost 8. I can remember me and all the kids being amazed by the "secret" taillight that popped open on the hippy kid next door's turquoise 56 Chevy wagon. Two doors down the neighbor had a 66 or 67 GTO, black with red pinstripes & redline tires. On the other side the lady had just gotten a new 69 Camaro convertible, yellow with a black top & interior, My best friends mom drove a 67 Impala SS 396 fastback, marina blue with a black gut. By the mid 70's my neighborhood was bursting at the seams with hopped up muscle cars. It may not be some of you guys thing, but those V-8 Vegas, 454 Chevelles, custom painted Camaros, big hood scoops etc. etc. were badass. Those were the days indeed.
Imho, we lost our virginity in '67 because '66 was the last year of the true bubble-gum music! (Circle, Hollies, Rascals, Turtles, The Happenings, etc., etc....) Now ALL long gone........ I think it went down hill later.. And I took position of my '67SS/RS Camaro car Dec. '66................. It's in my garage now. pdq67
Summer of 69,spent it at Parris Island.Wasn't worried about Nam.Thought I would never make it off the island. But I did.
I was in Ireland in '69 racing a Bultaco with a Norton on the road and a girlfriend that became the long suffering wife. 38 years this year and I would'nt trade her for the world (no she's not looking over my shoulder). [/IMG]
I can still remember 1969 even though I was 8,I can still remember alot in my younger years but after I found alcohol and other substances its a little fuzzy after that.
Graduated from H.S. Got a one year deferment and off to the military. Spent 1970 in Thailand, most awesome........
I turned 21 in '69, don't remember much of that year except that we had major surf all winter. We had our own tragic oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara. Fuckers destroyed miles of pristine beaches and surf spots. Wasn't that the same year the B of A in Isle Vista was bombed? And the village was occupied by the National Guard. Heavy scene...
Holy cow is that 48th St. in Newport? Man I wasn't born till 75 but grew up down there and those houses along Shorline and Neptune in upper west Newps still look exactely the same! Hahaha classic!
To me, one of the highlights of that year... or any year! http://www.kalbergcomm.com/files/class_of_70_moon_landing.wma
I remember when it all took place... I was in the 4th grade back then and we were listening to the loudspeaker in the school yard... I'm sure the whole world cheered those boys on when they landed..
