I have a DT-400 Sun Distributor Tester and I am looking into what it would take to test electronic distributors. Does anyone know the Sun Pulse Amplifier works? Do you need to supply 12V to one of the distributor leads on an electronic distributor such as for a GM HEI, Ford Duraspark, or Chrysler electronic for this to work or does the Distributor Tester itself provide the voltage? It seems like the Pulse Amplifier would need power itself to operate since I am guessing that it is a typical signal amplifier that usually needs power by itself just to operate. Has anyone ever looked inside one of these to see what is in this magic little box to figure out how it works. Has anyone ever built their own Pulse Amplifier instead of buying the overpriced & used original Sun units? It is my understanding that the Mallory Unilite or a Pertronix conversion does not need the Pulse Amplifier, but one or both may need voltage supplied for it to work. How do you hook one up? Are there any other electronic distributor that do not need the Pulse Amplifier to work such as MSD or others?
Back when i used the sun dist tester , we used a ford dura spark control box to run electronic distributors. Study that one for a day or two just wire it like it is one the car... I use Allen syncographs today........
This should answers your question (I think). http://www.ctci.org/membership/Gilsgarage/CheckingPertronix.htm
