I just picked up a sun mdt 50 distributor tester at the spring flea. Any suggestions before I try to fire it up and run it? I see a "capacitor kit" offered on the net. Would this be a smart thing to replace before putting power to the machine?, Does anyone have a pdf of the repair manual?

If it doesn't work, you'll probably need the capacitor kit.

Would you try to run it with out changing the capacitors first? Will it harm it?

I'd plug it in and see if it will work. If it doesn't work, start fixing it.

Well I bought the capacitor kit and installed it. (mark from paramount distributors was a great help with a detailed article for the install).. The distributor spins and the flash tube is functional now. I need to get my dwell and TACH working now. Mine had the mercury cell for the tach and a d cell for the dwell. Anyone see an issue with using a power supply from an old computer(resisted to 1.35v and 1.5v) to work in place of the old batteries? The schematic shows the batteries are used to "buck" against a 6v supply to cause the meters to read. I was just wondering if this would be worth it?
