Started sticking a couple of kits together, and I came up with this:

I did some more trimming/fitting on the hood after this shot, and I think I'll ditch the single-ribb Radirs for stock '37 Pickup wheels - like artillery wheels.

I'm trying to come up with something cool to "power" it.

Now wait a damn minute Dave....California is farther from Sunday than ANY of us. I think you pulled a red light! That is a cool poject, nothing I'd ever think of! I saw on the HHMB that you plan to rat it out...I kinda think it would look awesome finished in a satin yellow-gold, and WITH those Radirs.

Here's one I'm working on for Wlspdshop. My '32 A/C project in the background. Been in a drag car mood lately....I'm also working on a '33 Willys, and the AMT Piranha and a couple rails. My rat rods take a backburner to the competition cars!

    Hey Eric,
If you want, I have some extra aftermarket 32 parts laying around that you can have for that project if you want. I should have a photoetched grill, maybe a replicas and miniatures co. resin opened grill for the photoetch, and lots of extra parts from the model car garage detailing kits. If you want, PM me your address, and Ill just send you the stuff. I dont think I'll ever use the stuff, so better to see it go on someones project. Ive gotten into the Kustom thing so deep, that I have so many project ideas in my head, it will be a long time before I get to do a hot rod. Oh, boy those Hobby Heaven boys are easy to get stirred up, arnt they?

Here's the Willys. AMT kit slicks, Beverly Hillbillies custom front wheels on the back, polar lights funny car spindlemount 5-spokes in revell '31 sedan front runners on the front. Slightly z'd the chassis, brought it down a lot in the rear. Also slightly extended the front of the chassis.

Willys is really getting the look down where it should be - like 1967 or so. You going to drop an Olds or a blown smallblock in there instead of the usual SOHC or Hemi?

As far as my panel goes, I started looking at it more, and I agree that the rat look is all wrong for this one - I may save that for a '55 Ford Panel I want to build. Perhaps I'll make this one a tow rig for my track modified roadster, my channelled Model A coupe or perhaps the lakes modified. I've got enough trailers to tow a fleet of racers in boxes around here.

I also scored a Mickey Thompson Challenger I and a Tony Nancy double kit. - I'm thinking about building the Challenger I's Dragmaster chassis, dropping the Tony Nancy T body down over it, and powering the whole she-bang with a Potvin-blown Hemi I have laying around. Now THAT would be something to tow behind this little panel, loaded with an extra tank for nitro, tools and a few more slicks - maybe a couple of flip-down bunks in back...

I was just going to put the kit motor in it, but I'm not sure. I'm trying to make sure it doesn't end up looking like the MALCO car everyone builds with this kit. I've got the 22jr. double kit too....I know I wont build the full bodied car (kinda ugly...) so I may swipe the motor out of that, except I'm really not a mopar fan. I'd love to use the blown nailhead, but might have another use for it. Have to wait and see I guess.

    Okay guys,

Smoothed out the bodywork, and shot a little black primer to check things out. Doesn't photograph real well, but you get the idea.

Cool hauler, I kinda liked the blue and mags. That gasser A looks just like a car I know from around here, really cool! Here's the coupe that I had in primer last week. Still needs some finishing touches, but it's looking pretty decent.

Well, It has been hell for the past few days with my model. There are soo many coats of primer, that its causing a problem. I started off with some duplicolor crap that wouldnt dry hard, was like latex house paint. You cant sand that. The I found a duplicolor high build that dried and sanded great. I knew Id have to go to a laquer primer sooner or later, being that Ill paint the car with laquer. Well, the laquer primer (house of kolor from Black Gold) doesnt attack the duplicolor, but as it dries , and shrinks, it pulls the junk duplicolor away from the body in the tight crease area below the belt line. I kept trying to sand to bare plastic, but even just a very light layer of duplicolor in an area you cant see (the kit plastic is grey making it hard), the problem comes back. So the only solution was to sand all of the primer off. In doing so I found so much primer buildup on the rear fender area, that I could peel the primer off the model, like latex house paint peels off of metal when its really thick. Ive been sanding for hours. Now I get to prime, and do much of my bodywork over. Heres what she looks like now.

On the positive side, I got some interior work done, and its looking nice. Heres a door pannel, and some pics of it mocked up with the dash.

The door handles are just some parts box mock up pieces. They look ok, but Ill use some RMC0M resin ones for the final build.

We're evil - we cuss and shit. Can't believe what a bunch of tight-assed puritanical pussies some of these guys are. Tom, that owns Hobby Heaven isn't that tight-assed himself, but keeps that stuff off his board because the users there, which are also his customers, might get offended.

Oh boy, Ill tell you what, Mark earned a lot of respect from me after that whole deal. He emailed me to tell me he genuinely enjoyd the debate, and I believe him. He has never seemed to have a problem critiquing, its good too see he can take it as well.

This is a board for like minded people. I know models is a like minded hobby on the HHMB, but this board is a very unique thing that those guys will never understand the beauty of. The thing was, I had a smile on my face the whole damn time, I took it very lightly, as in the end, I made my point, and some agreed, and I really dont care what the others think. But some guys were obviousely getting very emotional about it.

I didn't see that post on the HHMB untill you said something here about it. Wow! I think the whole argument is a little pointless anyway, though I don't get and havn't seen any model car magazines since I bought one 10 years ago...

I definately see what you're saying Chad. The term "hot rod" is the same way, if you think about it. You say "hot rod" and you think '30's, '40's, and maybe even '50's cars. Then it starts being muscle cars. Then "modern muscle." And tuners, pro touring, etc....

....but Hot Rod Magazine keeps the same name. Granted they cover a broad range of cars, including traditional "hot rods" I don't generally think of '91 Camaro or '74 monte carlo when someone says "hot rod."

Some may think it's cut and dry, but I think it's pretty hard to say what is or is not a "custom." However, a car with a body kit is definately -not- a custom, no matter what those guys think. I think the confusion lies in calling a certain car a "custom" vs. saying it has been "customized."

Crap, you beat me to it! But big time?....nah, I don't think so.

Anyway, if you clicked on the link you already saw this.

I wanted to realistically lower the rear of a shoebox Ford, & leaf springs & lowering blocks wasn’t going to cut it. I remembered seeing an article in an older issue of Custom Rodder that retrofitted airbags for lowering a 51 Ford. I decided to give that look a try, using some of the photos in the magazine as a guide.

I used different sizes of styrene rod for the arms & air bag core, while using O-rings for the actual air bags. [IMG]

I made 4 small mounting plates on the rear axles out of thin styrene strips.

I had to modify the floor of the car so that the air bags would have room to fit, & also had to make a recess for the differential. Yeah…. it sorta’ looks like one of those faces in a modern Japanese cartoon. The frame rails are also C-notched.
While not 100% accurate, I had a fun time doing this, & I thing the end result will be okay. [IMG] [IMG]

Steve is here as well. I've been aquainted with him for some time now...and his stuff is simply flat out sweet.

One of the few builders that makes me go "ok I give up!" lol...

I'm workin' on my Big Deuce. Nothing pic-worthy right now but hopefully I'll have the body done by the end of the week...should have some good pics by next weeks post.

After the bodywork hell ive been going through, at least one thing I did today came out kinda cool. I made an aluminum boss to glue the Model Car Garage Sombrero Caddy wheel covers to so I could polish them easily. The I turned a set of bullets to glue into the centers. The other bullet is still atached to the piece of stock.

If anyone is interested, I may start doing some small runs of turned parts like bullets, proper scale peep mirrors, piston gear shift knobs (complete with grooves and rod bolt hole, I used to make these for sale at club meetings years ago) and some other stuff geared towards some of the more traditional custom and hot rod stuff that the (somewhat billet inflenced) aftermarket doesnt make. I'd only offer the stuff here on the HAMB and local MAMA meetings, as Id make the prices very fair, and it does take time to do this stuff. I can also make parts to drawings or copy full scale parts.[IMG]

    Keith,
Thanks, unfortunately, I just starting redoing all of the bodywork that took me weeks, but what can ya do. Are you a member of MAMA (Maryland Automotive Modelers Association)? If your a modeler, or just interested, you should come to a meeting sometime. Its said to be one of the biggest clubs in the US, a good 40-50 folks show up on most meetings. We meet every third saturday at the Greenbelt Community center. Check out www.mamasboyz.org, if you dont alwready know about it.
