I'm gonna do a shameless plug here for the HAMB Plastic Model Builders social group:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=105

Do you build model car kits? Don't make a difference what scale you build, if you'd like to chat w/ some like-minded HAMB'rs, check out the social group started by Luciomduran. We swap tips & talk shop, & post up our latest projects.

We have a build-off contest every few months (like our most recent- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=471252 ) where we pick a build style & at the end of the deadline we leave it up to the HAMB to vote for the favorites.

Its pretty cool, so pop in & say howdy. We'll be waitin' for ya.

Yea, I'm curious as to what scale that beast of a motor is. The thing looks huge!

Hey Johnny where did the 28/29 coupe body come from? Kool model.

  9. The drag motor ( actually, the entire car) is completely scratchbuilt in 1/8th scale. I was told the man has an entire machine shop at his home for building models.

I think I recognize this builder and I have asked a buddy to check it out for us. If the builder is who I think he is, he's also a former drag racer, machinist and outstanding modeler. More later, Gary

Meh,I dunno? With his work space, tools and time I Bet I could make something not even a thousandth as good as that.

    Doc.

  13. Haven't posted on Sunday Models for a while and my stuff is not even close to the same league as the pic above, but here goes anyhow.

This one is another replica of a real car. Originally built in the late ‘60s it's been on the road ever since.

Despite how it may seem on screen, I got the colour perfect, Daytona Yellow over grey primer, just like the original.

Real car has Aussie Holden independent front suspension and semi eliptic rear. Since nobody does a scale Holden front end I didn’t bother changing the kit chassis other than the RHD conversion.

Don't think anybody will notice the engine is a '327 not a 350 like the real car.

Then I tried to use decals from other kits for the flames, but it turned out no good. So, I attempted the job using Maskol and my airbrush. Screwed that up too! So, I started again, using good old masking tape, pencil and a sharp blade.

I found a photo-etched banjo wheel in my parts dept, so there's another matching detail covered. The dash had to be cut into six pieces to make it right hand drive. Then it needed some extra work to remove the glove box lid mouldings and clock, a recessed gauge panel was created where the radio grille used to be and aftermarket gauges with photo-etched surrounds add depth and another matching detail. Although I think I’m a dial short with the small ones.

The seats were modified using leather working tools (honest) so they look a little more like what's in the real car. The pin-striping on the dash is not the same but that's all I could find in black that fitted.

The worn patch on the door was a given, as too will be the droopy outer handle.

The, boot-lid pin-striping isn’t an exact replication of the real car, but like the flames it works OK to make sure there's no mistaking what car it’s meant to be. I even found a handle in the ‘parts dept’ that’s as close to a perfect match to the non original part on the 1/1 car.

So now there's just some paint details, interior sunvisors, outer handles, bumpers, rear vision mirrors and a few other bits, not least being the license plates, and it's another one done.

    Thank you! :)

The coupe body is a R&R Vaccum Craft item. They have it on Ebay from time to time, I think the seller is either miteymouse or msmiteymouse. Good luck!

    Doc and all,
You are right, the guy is a fantastic moderer. I thought I recognized this model, but I couldn't be sure from the one photo that was posted earlier. The builder's name is Dave Sherman and he mostly works in the larger scales. His craftsmanship and technical expertise (about real race cars) really shows in his work. A link to his work is posted below.

WARNING... if your model building egos are easily bruised, DO NOT go here. You will be certainly be amazed, but also perhaps crushed at the same time. Also, make a head call and get a snack before you hit this site - you will be there a long time. Later, Gary

  19. I think he's up to about three gazillion and five.

Of course once I've got it finished there will be some 'cotton wool' added around the rear tyres. ;)

  20. Of course photoshop is probably just as good as cotton wool.

Both Leo and the car may have aged, but nuthin much else has changed. :D
