^^^^right out of school I got a job selling appliances and one of the salesmen on the floor was pitching some folks on a Magic Chef Fridge, he pulled out the crisper drawer and jumped on it to show how tough it was (like veggies weigh hundreds of pounds), it shattered and he fell on his ass. I don't know if he make the sale but we enjoyed the show!

    Hello,
Hood scoops were not the most popular thing on our daily drivers in So Cal. The attraction of scoops is still questionable for everyday driving in all sorts of weather and areas. It certainly is not for dusty, gravel roads, beach front highways as the winds blow sand across the front end of your car. It is a giant air scoop catching all things and shapes to get sucked into the carbs. Hood louvers were nice, but in the same category of sucking in odds and ends creating problems wet or dry.

For a short period of a quarter mile, a scoop was good as it did suck in as much air into the carbs or motor compartment. It was not until the street cars started to imitate the drag cars as far as looks. Some went as far as using real Hilborn Scoops to simulate that the street car had a Hilborn Injection System below. It was like a person using a 671 supercharger without rotors and was just a hollow chamber to simulate a full race supercharged motor for street use. YRMV

As far as when, the earliest advertisement that was available was from 1965 when the drag racing classes for the Gas Coupes And Sedans, Street Roadsters, and others were in turmoil and fell to the wayside in favor of the AA/FD plus funny cars.

Old parts, whether home made, modified and those that were from fly by night shops came and went like the “swallows back to Capistrano.” Some still exist, leave a mess in the surrounding areas and take off like a rarity seen once a year, if ever.

In 1965-66, going to college in Northern California, San Jose area, I saw a lot of these scoops in the neighborhood. At the Fremont Dragstrip, there were some early hot rodders that used the San Jose Mercury/SF Chronicle Newspaper yellow, cubby holes that everyone (Almost in most residential places) had on the streets of San Jose. They looked just like the picture above.

There was also the competition newspaper from San Francisco called The Chronicle with their tubes, too. They looked a little odd, but as far as getting in that valuable air, they did the job. Plus, it was virtually free.

There were other brands of newspaper only containers. The yellow color stood out well and if your car was painted yellow, it “flowed” more ways than one.

The last two are new versions from Amazon.
