I aswered a Craigs List ad this morning for "2 G.M. 4-speeds-$50.00". The pic was a small one, and it was hard to tell what they really were, so I went out to look at them. It was too good of a deal to p*** up, and I asked the guy if he had a ten to break a twenty. He told me, "just give me FORTY"! So, I wound up with a 3 ring, Saginaw 4-speed AND a Saginaw 3-speed WITH overdrive for FORTY DOLLARS! I have the article somewhere to do the conversion of making a 4-speed Saginaw with overdrive. The guy also had 2, 64-65 El Caminos, and lives in Sultan, Washington; now I wonder if it was "****gy" here on the HAMB, as he also has 2, 64-65 El Caminos. Anyone know the "electrics" for the overdrive hookup? This was a deal I could'nt p*** on, not that I have any current use for them. ****gy, was that you? Butch/56sedandelivery.
Basically, the 3 and 4-speed Saginaws share the same case. By drilling a hole in the 4-speed case for an actuator rod, you can attach the overdrive unit to the 4 speed, and wind up with a 4-speed with overdrive. There are articles on the net how to go about it. Butch/56sedandelivery. Try ChevyTrucks.org/tech/overdrive for an article of how the conversion is done.
Which gears split up when you do it on a 4 speed? 3 and 4? just 4? My dads 57 with stock 3spd/OD gets another gear in 2 and 3
I found the article here. Pretty good explanation. It says you use a 1965-newer 3spd overdrive unit. Im not doubting it, but I didnt even know they used the old manual 3 speed with overdrive that late. Interesting.
