I was just reading Draglinkscc post for a roofrack/surfboard hauler and it made me think "I'm in Ohio, ain't got no surf." Then it hits me "how about a snow board on the roof of my '50 plymouth wagon?" Am I stupid or is this, could this, be sort of cool?? Need your feedback before fuckin up my car.

Don't know why not. Snowboardin's cooler than surfing anyway, temp wise.

Nope, your '50 wagon will be cool with boards of any type.

Mine is getting surfboards - even though I'm in north Texas - but they're gonna be INside the car, not on the roof. I don't want to trash the only good body panel on the entire car. I sold the back glass to a DeSoto restorer already...

do they have ski resorts in Ohio? embrace the availibility of vintage waterskis, check the local thrift store. if you have a station wagon, you could modify a gun rack to store/display your new find in the rear windows, no f-ups required...

Boy you have a 50 Plymouth wagon.
The way I see it. You really don't need to do anything to the car to get attention.
Throw on some whites and lower it and your good to go.
Surfboards are meant to copy the 50-60's woodys in Cali.
    I don't remember ever seeing a snowboard.
In fact, those things never even existed. Don't try to accomplish something that never was.
Since you asked for an opinion thats mine.:D :)

That whole "is this ok" thing is bs.
Do what you want, and don't sweat it.

Here's my buddy's 54 chevy wagon. With surfboard.
He doesn't have a rack yet, but hey..it's driving.
We're close to you and nowhere near surfable water, but he's doing what he wants.

The rack comes next, then some door lettering.

    I say: Have at it!

Beatnik and I where just talking about this on Friday...One of the GMB's was thinking surfboards but where can you surf 'round here! Most of us midwesterners don't even know what a surfboard looks like!

Having a surfboard on a landlocked car that's not a woody seems odd. Having a surfboard on your car and you've never surfed, makes you the ulitmate poseur, IMO. Having a snowboard? Maybe but same deal. If you don't snowboard, then why? That would be like living on the coast, having a board on your car and never having been surfing. Poseuriffic.

Abomber30 had a big skateboard on his wagon. Looked good, and as far as I know, Drew can skate... made sense.

put the boards in the wagon in a snowboard bag:) No need to have them on top if you don't have too.I think if your talking about "looking cool", it would definitely distract you from the look of your car:( I have the smallest trunk in my A coupe, but i don't put my skateboard attached to the roof:) It's stuffed in back!

But then again, why ask others what looks cool or not, just do what you like and what comes natural to you. What some think is cool, may look completely stupid to others and visa versa... as they say to each his own:)

  11. two things that would make it gay. 1.= is if you dont snowboard. 2. =would be if you do snowbaord but you take your 4x4 to the Mtns. not the wagon.

So if you emulate a salt-flat car and you've never been there and run, are you a poseur?

My car IS landlocked, I give you that. But of the cars I saw in HB last year, at least half of them were non-woodys with boards on them. And I CAN surf, there's just nowhere to do it here. I'm trying to emulate a look.

How 'bout a ladder rack and one of them huge PVC pipes full of stuff?

Or the stuff that goes on the roof of the Ghostbusters car?

    Or a huge exterminator-style bug?

Or that radar dome thing on those AWACS planes?

    A treehouse?

    A Big Boy?

  17. that's what i was going to say. get a longboard skateboard. i've seen them made by some companies that are 62" long! google "longboard skateboard" to check some out. chances are, your local skate shop won't have any in stock or the young jerks with big pants won't give you the time of day when you walk in the store, (which is the problem i'm running into. guess they don't want my money.) but you can get them online cheaper anyway. plus they are ultra cool!

I see your point, BUT that is emulating a car style, not a lifestyle. At the flats, the car is the point... for a surfer, the car is secondary to the surfing.

I was thinking what Cab said anyway... if you were a snowboarder, why would you want the board outside all the time anyway... doesn't make sense.

How about a giant stuffed big mouth bass? :D

Has anybody here ever seen any pics of REAL surfin safari cars?!!

They were the biggest pieces o' shit you have ever seen...

Picture a Gypsy wagon with every wheel painted a different color etc...

I always laugh when I see these immaculate woodies with surboards on or in them...

The reason surfers had woddies was because they were big enough and cheap as dirt... And usually beat to hell.

They would just drive them into the ground and leave them where they dropped.

Not the 'look' I would shoot for with a nice car. Screems anachronism.

Hold on, wait a minute here!
Having a surf board on your car and you don't surf makes you a poser?
How about building a gasser style car and you don't race? Isn't that the same thing? Do I hear a double standard here?
We think it's real cool to see a car done up as on old '60s gasser, why not a '60s surf wagon? If it's done right (window decals and all) I think it would look great.

Find a wood longboard skateboard.. they are reasonable in cost and look cool, plus you can have it stripped.

Grumpy, your buddies wagon, was it owned by Squigy before (he had one very similar). Either way , I dig it. Would love to see more pics of it, would also love to chat with your buddy, may be able to help each other out finding parts...

check out the skis that are available RIGHT NOW...some cool ones, and some that need the paint stripped off.

be the first one on your block to break out the vintage skis! most of the bare wood ones are beautiful pieces of lumber, but they're impractical to use, so they're cheap. you can paint "billy-bob's speed and marine" on the bottom, and hang 'em (logo side out) in the side windows. less likely to fall off or get stolen that way. they'd also make great display shelves.

I've seen the ski's used and its pretty cool. you must be a matching pair to look right and as mentioned, they have some great looking wood. Some sanding and varnish would do wonders. mount the cooler and a ski rope rolled up and you would be set. (maybe a wicker pinic basket.

One day I will find an early Dog Town skateboard to mount on my wagon... I have about given up finding a decent priced Single fin longboard.

Yeah, he got it from squigy. Had to completely assemble it. It was tore down basicly.
I told him of the pros and cons of a surf wagon in Ohio. And I also told him a couple sets of vintage skis and suitcases would be cool.
He basicly said He could care less. He's doing what he wants.
The board is a loaner from another buddy. So it may not last forever.
My wife is a big collector of old suitcases and has several pairs of vintage snow skis, but no water skis.
So he knows she can get him whatever he wants once he decides to give the board back.

So for now, he's just rolling and having fun.

  29. The last time I looked..., Ohio was bordered by a Great Lake called Erie...!?!?!

And I know there is rideable surf on the Great Lakes ( as seen in the film "Step Into Liquid")..., and I know several members of the Great Lakes Surfing Association officers and members..., and I've surfed those cold waters myself on a "Borrowed longboard"...!

Put a surf board on your car as well as a "GLSA" decal on the glass and keep everyone guessing...!!!;)

You have an idea of how you want your car to look and I say go for it....!!!

Screw the Poo- Poo-er's..., "Lifes short"..., "Have fun"..., and maybe you could go to a car show on the Great Lakes and have the perfect conditions to catch a few waves...!:D
