I bought a new SW deluxe electronic water temp gauge to use on my flathead along with 2 -12v sw senders (one for each head, connected to toggle switch). I got them installed into my Edelbrock heads using the included sw adapters but I don’t like the way they look. I think they stick out to far for my liking. I tightened them down as far as I felt comfortable because I didn’t want to snap them in 2 pieces and I am sure I went beyond 20 inch lbs SW recommends. I haven’t tested them yet but if I remember right the sender probe extends about 1/4” below the adapter threads. I’d like to have senders that screw in flush with the head ports like the original senders and compatible with SW gauge. Looking for ideas or do they look fine?
SW use to supply senders in all NPT thread sizes. You should be able to get senders without using the adapter bushing.
Old gauge with old NOS senders. They'll still stick out of the head, but not as much as the one you have now.
Looks to me that maybe you could cut the thread on the body of that down another 1/2"? Or is that a tapered thread?
Is this what you are looking for? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sww-334ad-d?seid=srese2{ifdyn%3asrese3} What size NPT? What is max temp number on gauge face?
I saw that sender but my gauge is a 240. Guess I could return it for a 280 gauge. 3/8 npt 240 degrees The only sw I can find is 3/8 npt (no adapters needed) and for 240 gauge but it is out of stock everywhere until summer. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sww-362aj-d just found 2 new ones on eBay, $19.99 each. Bingo..!!

thanks Phil I bought 2 of these : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Stewart-Wa...-3d2f30dcabbd&epid=1133957384&redirect=mobile
If you have the wings gauges, SW recommends that you use a 230* sender even though the gauge face says 240*, you will read about 10* hotter due to the calibration of the sender versus the sweep of the wings style gauges. They have that sender in several NPT sizes. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/stewart-warner-wings-water-temp-inaccurate.685849/page-3
I'm using SW Green Line gages and the same senders. As the pictures show, mine sit high like yous. I reworked brass fittings that had wrench flats rather than the thread adapters that came with the senders. I couldn't see how their thread adapter could possibly be tightened enough to seal in the Aluminum head. Conversely, how do you get the adapter back out if the sender fails ? BTW , my 2 senders measure different resistance values. One is around 59 ohms and the other is 1.9xx ohms. I called SW to find out which is correct and they said to test them in hot water ( connected to the gage) and send the bad one back. ??????? Obviously they don't know or can't get access to the specs on the unit. I did read some feedback; I think on Speedways site that the other " SW sender " would not read accurately. I don't know the part #. That prompted me to call SW and get the correct one... the one we both have.
I don’t have a wings gauge. It’s their deluxe series because it more closer match to my other sw gauges. Thanks for the heads up. very good point Joel..about no way to install/remove adapter by itself. I do have a couple of black aluminum adapters for these senders but didn’t like the way they made senders stick out even further. Might give them another try with the new senders. I really had a difficult time getting one of the senders out WITH the adapter attached. Luckily, I was able to tighten the sender enough that it bit into the adapter and I backed it out. I think I will call SW on Monday to find out which sender I should use even though I think the gauge came with a sender as a bundle. I bought an extra for other head. when you reworked the brass fitting, I****ume you meant trim it down and retread it? here is the adapter or bung I bought to go with sender but didn’t like it either.
Called Stewart Warner and their engineer confirmed that their 362ajd sender I bought off eBay is compatible with their e fuel gauge. The ohms reading at 120 and 220 degrees are the same as the sw 280es sender that came with the gauge. side story on this call. The first time I called ,I called their 800 number, selected 4 to speak to customer service and some woman answered the phone “what do you want”. I was shocked, and replied “excuse me? Isn’t this Sw tech support?”. She then proceeded to tell me I reached a private number and what did I want. I told her she didn’t have to be so rude and that I got transferred from a business automated phone system. She got a little nicer but not much. That’s never happened to me.
