Hey guys. I'm toying with swapping a thm7004r behind my 235ci, and I want to change my rear gearing to take advantage of my freeway gear. Two questions: how do I tell my current gearing on the rear axel, and would it be more beneficial to swap in a whole new rear axel or get this one re- geared? Also, what years would work in either oitions? I was looking for 3.73 or 4.10 gears.
Up to 62 the common 1/2 ton gear was around 3.90. The optional or Automatic trans gear was 3.38. I did a customers 66 that had a 250 six, and put in a 700r4 with the stock 3.73 1966 gears. that setup was nice until you hit a big hill on the highway and did not plan ahead with more speed at the bottom. Jack up one wheel; mark the drive shaft and mark the tire. Spin the tire 2 exact turns while counting the driveshaft turns. It will turn either slightly less than 4 if it's a 3.90, or it would turn 3-1/3rd turns for a 3.38 A 3.38 won't work, but the 3.9 should be tit
The rearend from a '73-87 chevy truck is the easiest to use if you can get a '82-87 with the factory 700r4 they had 3.73 rears in them.
Hold the phone ... how is a 700r4 going to bolt to a 62 six? .. I believe up to 62 the six had the old bell pattern...maybe 63 I think they used the v8 style pattern on the six.
Yea, the 62 is able to take the 700R4 with the adapter plate. Thanks for the responses, and thanks F&J for the info about my rear end, I'm always amazed at the knowledge of you guys!
