Well I have been planning on putting in a 302 in my Ford. I just found an add in the local Craigslist for a "complete" 292 y block that was recently rebuilt for $50. Sounds to good to be true. I have a few questions. I have the I-6 with the Fordomatic. Will the Y mate to this ****** ok? What should I look for on the yblock when I go to take a look at it? I am thinking of this swap until I can get the time and money to get my 302/AOD combo that is if this motor is complete and doesnt need to much work.
Got ahold of the owner and he bought it from a neighbor who had it rebuilt and then used it for about a year before removing it and putting in a chevy 350 in his truck. He as had the motor for 4 years and hasnt done anything with it. He said everything on the motor is there except the headers. He said the heads were completely rebuilt with hardened seats along with the bottom end. He offered it for $25 since he hasnt been able to get any offers. He recommend the heads be pulled off and honed a bit to clean them up but said it turns over freely and has oil still in it. What are your thoughts? For $25 sounds like it might be worth picking up.
sounds like he either forgot to put a zero or so on the end of his prices, or it is too good to be true. sounds like s**** metal pricing tho, so be careful.
If I recall, no, it will not bolt right up to the fordomatic. I believe the bellhousings are different. There is one for the yblock and one for the I-6. I have an I-6 sitting in my 4 door right now, with a fordomatic sitting in there too. Doesnt look like they will bolt up. I had that fordomatic on my yblock. I contacted JeffB2 about this. If I am wrong, he screwed me! lol Jk Jeff!
Recently rebuild Y block for $50 ? You can't get a block cleaned for $50 . I would say it's a bunch of ******** but that's me . To have a Y block rebuilt the right way will cost you $4000 to $5000 easily ! Personally I would find a nice 302 roller engine and use that . I had a Y block in my 55 that ran very good and sold that to a friend for a roadster he is building . I am rebuilding my engine right now and going with a 302 and C4 set up . The engine is far from stock plus I build engines on the side . So I only pay for the parts and the machinist costs . If you go with a 289 / 302 / 5.0 or 351w , try to find a AOD trans so you have the option of the overdrive . A C4 is a great chose but the AOD will give you better fuel mileage . Just what ever you choose to use , just be happy with it and drive it all you can ! There is nothing wrong with a good 6 cyl and if it's already there , you might just want to keep it and save some gas ! Get the rest of the car fixed first if you have a good drive train . You can always get an engine and trans later down the road . If it wasn't for the bad Ford O Matic I had in mine . I would have kept the Y block . Jim
Here is a photo I received from the owner of the engine. I am heading over there tonight to pick it up.
Thanks for the offer, yea you are a bit out of the way. Though what I have understood I dont need the full FOM just the bellhousing. I can swap them out and leave my current FOM in the car.
Finally picked up the Y last night. Here is what I have. The block is a ECZ 6015 C - 292 I can not find the ID on the cylinder heads though by looking when the block was made they are more then likely ECZ-G heads It has the 4 barrel B intake small air horn afb carb late model distributor I will post some pics later today. covered. So I see some corrosion around the tops of some of the valves. The water pump also looks like it needs some help as well. So I am going to need to tear the whole thing down to clean her up. So any help will be appreciated on how to tackle this. Though I think a great deal for $25.
I can't believe the guy would sell it that cheap,He probably had no clue of the value just the "B" intake alone will bring $100+.You got one "smokin' deal"!
Got yourself a great deal ! I see the freeze plugs have been replaced . Just remove a valve cover and that will tell you what heads you have . Anyway you look at it , you didn't get hurt on the price for a 292 ! BTW I have a 57, 3 on the tree column with box and wheel , bell housing , 3 speed trans , swing peddles and just about all the parts to make a standard set up ! . Bought a complete set up from a guy to do my 55 Ford but changed my mind and went a different way . ALL that stuff is for sale since I won't be using a Y block anymore . It will all be going to Ford Carsile show in Carsile Pa in late June so if someone is looking for some standard shift parts I have them ! Jim
Yea he said he had been trying to sell it for a few months but no one was calling if they did they never should up. So when I showed interest he knocked the price to 25 to try to get me to come pick it up. He said that it was rebuilt before being stored 4 years ago. Though by the looks I think it may have been done a bit later then that. Though 4 years of setting under a tarp outside could have weathered it a bit. So Jim, what are you asking for for the manual setup? Though living in Nevada I have a feeling shipping will cost me more then what you would be asking.
