Except for the transmission I have done it just like you, A small dent in the firewall to clear the right valvecover and I had to modify the X member so I can pull trans without removing the engine. More pics will come
I have made a shelf behind the seat and taken out the car for some paint removing, much nicer to do this messy business outside.
Have started working on the chassis but I have forgotten to take pics of it, but here are a few. Thew chassis when I started , boxed the front of x-member,made cutuots for exhaust pipes, installed the rear suspension and the Mustang II front suspension.
I have mounted the body back on the Willys chassis for a check of the rideheight, I think it looks a lot better now.
Next to do was to modify the centersection to fit with the Mustang II suspension. I also wanted some louvers to aid cooling, many Thanks hotrod--willys for showing how to do them. I am pretty satisfied with the look.
Next thing to do was the hood, installing gas struts and hood latch, the gas struts are VW and the latch is from a Volvo.
I had a latch identical to that on my '41 pickup, and it came from a VW Rabbit...coincidence? g-willys
I have made the motor mounts and transmission mount. And it looks like the steering shaft will pass the engine without problems.
After mounting the engine and transmission I could do the floor over the transmission and the small modification of the firewall for the right valvecover.
Hi I have been working out of town for a while but here are some new pics. I bought a cheapo tilt steeringcolumn not so wise, the tilt mechanism is sloppy and the u joint has lot of play I really dont recomend this steering column. I have also installed the master cylinder and brake pedal
After the steering column I made a new column drop from an old aluminium rod And a parking brake handle from a Willys jeep, I think they are the same as my 40 coupe should have.
Get rid of that steering column - there is a thread here on the Hamb which will tell you how dangerous they are.
I have made the gear shift linkage I did before I realised that the steering column was crap. I have also made the parts for the parking brake under the floor. And some pics of transmission and the rear suspension.
Here are the wheels I hace decided to use on my Willys, American Rebel 15x8 in the rear and 15x4.5 in the front. I can really recomend buying from these guys very nice people.
Next thing I made was the bracket for the radiator, condenser and transmission cooler. I wanted everything removable without removing the centersection, now if I raise the car I can drop the whole thing down. The radiator holder is made for a Griffin 26"x16" radiator
As I wanted my Willys to handle well I have installed a swaybar. After moving it back, forward and down I realised thet the only way I could make it fit was running it through the chassis.
My Willys came with a very small homemade gas tank, but I wanted a pretty big one for better cruising range. I have bought a 42-48 Ford gas tank and mounted it backwards so the filler neck would come in the right place. I have also modified the trunk floor because I dont want the tank to be seen from the back.
Very slick on that sway bar through the frame. I always have them under the frame, but that idea is one to keep for future use.
I have tackwelded the exhaust system, a 2.5" stainless system with Magnaflow mufflers. Then a friend at work do the final tigwelding. I have also removed the flange on the headers and installed v-band clamps, I like them, they are easy to connect and dont leak.
And now I have relocated the battery in my Willys from under the the hood to behind the passenger seat.
I have made a fuel filler neck from a Hooker 2 1/4" header tube for my Ford gas tank. And for gas cap I have bought one for a Volvo PV 444 . And made a cover for it.
