No I'm not a foreigner or completely crazy, but, I am planning to build a speedster using a 1928 Chevy Ch***is. To make it appear older, and different, I'd like to make it right-hand drive. Any suggestions or advice on components to use to switch this Chevy front axle to right-hand drive?
Yeah you need to do something to make a 28 Chevy speedster stand out nowadays. There’s way too many of them on the road.
Go "cross" steering and use a Vega box. Reverse Vega boxes are RHD boxes. Flipping it around to mount on the other side of the frame leg is the same thing as using one RHD. The best deal (on the China boxes anyhow) may be from Great Britain. They are a reverse box here, they are just a box there. Mike
As someone who drives from the right side every day (mailman), I want to give you some things to think about. EVERYTHING is set up in this country for left hand drive. Why do you think they drive on the wrong side of the street in England? You can't see what's coming at you, if there is a vehicle in front of you. Trying to p*** a car is a nightmare. You have to be completely in the p***ing lane, before you can see if somebody's coming at you. If being cool is more important than being safe, go for it. If you ever want to sell this thing, forget it. You probably won't find anybody with cash, who is willing to re-learn how to drive.
Id put a wanted ad on prewarcar.com and see what turns up. Its worldwide and gets alot of traffic. I bet that stuff turns up for a Chevy fairly easily
@Deere boy . No you dont need to do that at all. You need to hunt down a Mitsubishi RWD Galant / Sapporo / Starion steering box. [A160] Mitsubishi 's had narrow frame rails so they mounted the steering box on the outside of the frame rails. When you shift it over to the other side ,it mounts on the inside of the frame rail. They also make a compact power steering box with a 16:1 linear ratio. We did the exact opposite! We used a RHD Galant A160 power steering box in a C3 Corvette [Race Car] to get rid of the terrible power steering ram system. The RHD box shifted over to the inside frame rail of the Corvette.
The opposite applies here. Yet a RHD American car has no appeal here. People love the novelty value of driving on the opposite side. I got my drivers permit in a LHD car [in NZ] P***ing cars will make you more vigilant.........and there is a complete new set of blind spots [eg doing a RH turn from an intersection]. I don't recommend this for Low Performance drivers who seem to be oblivious to their surroundings. Backing a car out of the driveway is the worst [you need to turn your head the opposite way]
We did the Mitsubishi steering swap. A RHD box from the outside of the frame on the right to the inside of the left for a LHD 54 Ford Victoria. I am sure could do the same but opposite side swap . I think this box may be too big and bulky for an early Chevy. No problem p***ing cars if the drivers seat is in the curb, but have to trust your p***enger and have a clear decision, “no or go “ that doesnt work to much the same . Clear, yes , or a simple, no wait.
I drive my RHD Utes here in LHD world of the USA. It's not that bad, you get used to it. Takes some extra attention when driving. Drive through are not advised unless you have a p***enger.
The Mitsubishi EX Lancer [1981 era] is a smaller box with the same outside rail layout. Japanese Import EX Lancer turbos had power steering [and the smaller box] Sitting next to the Curb can cause "whiplashed eyeballs" when cruising the beaches in summer [be warned ]
51/54 Chevy car steering boxes bolt to the inside of the left frame rail in normal operation. That makes them pretty easy right hand steering and the box will mount to the inside of the frame rail and sit on top of the rail on the earlier frame to have right hand drive. Thinking that I might want to have my speedster be right hand drive I checked i out and the pitman arm fore/aft movements work for right hand steering.
Well dam it I was going to say lhd 52/54 chev and some on else beat me too it also WW2 jeep is good I put one in a ford RHD special
If you are going sidesteer, a Burman box from a LHD Series 2 Land Rover will give you right hand drive - looks period too. I'm using a RHD box to give me LHD in the UK - to make it more saleable in Europe if I ever sell
These are not the Australian made Mitsubishis are they? I have been looking for a replacement box for my LHD 47 Chevy.
Yeah, had a Ute and have an O/T Falcon. Driving isn't much of a problem, though getting used to the view of the world through the rear view mirror is a challenge for a while.
I had an O/T 1950 MGTD just before I got drafted. A couple of weeks before I had to report a buddy and I took a trip in Late August to the Colorado River for one last bender fore I started my vacation with Uncle Sam. On the last day I quit drinking because it was a long hot drive in August across the desert but my buddy was pounding beer up until the time we left. Just outside of Blythe I got pulled over by a couple of chippies for a burned out head light. Next thing I know is my buddy is off in the desert performing FST's for one of the chippies. Went he asked why he was being tested the chippie indignantly advised him about the drunk driving law in CA. To which he said "but I wasn't driving, look at the car" The chippies had a good laugh about the car being RHD but still gave me a minor in possession ticket for the unopened 6 pack of Coors on the floor board. My guess is that that cold sixer never made it to the evidence locker, but who knows.
