I'm running 20/50 in my SBC now & I want to switch over to syntehic, what weight should I run?I'm going with a full syntec. not a blend. JimV
I've heard that Mobil 1 is the best, but if you ask 10 different people you'll get 15 different answers. I just remember hearing somewhere that Mobil 1 is the only one that is all synthetic. I figure if all the high zoot German cars have it from the factory, it will work for what I'm doing. They have a 15W-50, but no 20W50. I wanted 10w-40, and they told me to mix 10w-30 and their 15w-50. I've also heard that you aren't supposed to go back and forth from conventional to synthetic because it'll leak on you.
If you have older seals or a high milage engine, it may leak... it is HIGH detergent content so it'll break up any old sludge/crust you have and cause older seals to leak. With my 2000 silverado I bought new, I waited til the 10k mark, with my 93 it was 50k. I don't wanna use it in the Stovebolt until it gets rebuilt. But Mobil 1 is awesome*****, I will vouch for that. This could be a good topic for discussion...I am a believer of synthetic and I have all my vechicles on AMSOIL...and no this is no more of a plug than MOBIL1, I have used amsoil in all my***** for about 6 years and I really am impressed..I still change my oil more than they say to ..but that's just because I'm a screwed up car nut about good clean oil. My shop truck or everyday driver is a 98 Dakota 4X4 with a 360...I have 265000 ks on this thing ,I have all the diff's done and the*******s had a reseal job no parts, and swapped to amsoil...I drive the truck pretty hard ,, still enjoy gettin in'to it from time to time...and I fully plan on puttin 500000 on this girl as I really like the truck ..I got my rod (36 Chevy 350/350) on amsoil, wifes 01 Caravan ,on amsoil, I think the technical story could be argued and debated till we send a manned mission to mars..so I'll leave that to somebody with more knowledege and writing skills than I to help with discussing the pro's and con's of synthetic oils and or whether or not ones better than the other.. I wouldn't use anything in any of my vechicles but amsoil....shit sounds like a cheap commercial...I also have a few friends that use it as well....Fatchuk
A buddy who drag races (multipal national record holder) did back to back runs, first regular oil then Mobil 1 picked up on e.t. and mph. with the Mobil 1. I put it in my driver Chev pu with an 8.1 and picked up 1 mpg towing over the same route I'd done a month before.

[/ QUOTE ] Since I started using synthetic oil (Castrol; don't think there is a big difference between brands) I have found my Dakota starts easier in cold weather ( -28 deg. C last night; and block heater NOT plugged in) has given BETTER gas mileage; and oil pressure doesn't drop as low when the engine is hot. Castrol synthetic is approved for Chryco engines. (I think Mobil is also, plus some others) I even run synthetic lube in both vehicles rear axles. ('41's axle is an 8" Ford) The Dakota rear end is noticably "quieter". It's a posi. Before anyone "jumps me" there are (Chryco approved) synthetic lubes for their rear axles. DrJ, have you had a bad experience with synthetic lubricants ??
Amzoil was one of the first full synthetics and remains one (if not the) best on the market. Its been tested and retested and every comparison I've read has synthetic lubricants coming out on top. Jet aircraft have used them almost from day one its one of the most brutal environments there are for lubricants to survive in. Frank
