I've been using synthetic oil in my daily drivers since the late 80's (Mobil 1). I switched to Royal Purple about 3 years ago. I go 6000 miles between changes and have never had any motor problems (I get ride of my cars at 200k miles). As far as break in is concerned, I've always put about 9 - 10k miles on them first with conventional oil.
Old wives tale about not using synthetic in a new engine, lots of new models are shipped from the factory with Mobil 1. Rings may take a little longer to seat but they WILL seat. I know of individuals that have over 350,000 on vehicles with conventional oils nad the same with synthetics. Remember some people can destroy an anvil with a box of Q-Tips and others can drive a junker for years. All modern oils are more than adequate for the job, just have to do as others have said and change on a regular basis and use good quality filters.
I have 236,000 miles on my F150 daily driver. It has a straight 6. (Maybe I'll have my hot rod finished by the time it dies so I can use it and avoid car payments.) I've always bought mid-quality filters and dino-oil every 5,000 miles. Most of the miles now days are highway miles because I drive 1 hour to work every day, but for about 4 years, I used it as my appliance repair truck. It started and stopped about 8 or 10 times a day and was driven hard to the next house because I was always in a hurry. It's still pulling strong - no smoke. Lately, I've started being careful to select an oil with a lot of zinc in it. I've always used a name brand instead of the store brands or generic. I'm not commenting one way or another about synthetic oils because I've never used them. I'm just relaying my own experience with dino-oil.
The reason that synthetics oils leaks easier is due to smaller molecules, not because of viscosity. My daily has 150,000 on it, I used synthetics from 10,000 up, no leaks no worries. Change every 10,000 whether it needs it or not.
OK, dumb question here. Ready? WTF is AMSOIL? Never heard of it. Is it some yankee oil that is available only up North or what? See, I told you....a dumb question.
after reading this i felt like a ****ing idiot. i never knew that synthetic had that much of a advantage. thank y'all for the info.
You guys that have the extended oil changes (10,000 miles). Synthetic oil does retain its' lubrication properties for a long time, however, a primary reason for more frequent changes is contamination of the oil. Abrasives, fuel and other contaminents render high mileage oil no good.
I drive high mileage cars and have for 40 years. I buy dino oil on sale and cheap filters. BUT I change oil and filter every 5000 miles. My current ride is a '95 Caprice wagon with the LT-1 engine. It had 290,000 on it when I bought it with no engine rebuild. I bought it for about junk price. I have put 35,000 miles on it with no problems. I have changed oil every 5000 miles and need to add a quart between changes. I would love to try syn oil but I have had such good results with dino oil why change? Just my opinion.
