I have a T-10 close ratio box in a Model A w/SBC(283) and 2.73 gears in the rear end. How much trouble is it convert the box to wide ratio so the car has better street manners off the line (less clutch slipping). P.S. I like the high gear for highway cruising so they stay.
You could put a DNE 4 +1 in without modification, dependant on your yoke splines. This will give you a nice close set of gears for playing and with the direct top gear you can retain your exiting rear end for the highway cruising you like. P.
T-10's came in 2 ratios. The most common was the 2.54 to 1 ratio first gear and the close ratio had a 2:20 to 1 first gear. I got out the build sheet on the 62 409 I have to see if there was anything on it about transmission choice. It merely lists the 4-speed as a $236.75 option but I know for a fact that it was a close ratio. I still have the busted cluster gear. The car was ordered new by my best friend. I bought the car from his widow after he died in 1972. It's my opinion that if you ordered a high performance engine option and a 4-speed option the close ratio was substituted but I can't prove it.
According to this link http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/transmission-information-30771.html T10s came in more than 2 ratios. And that doesnt include the super T10s. As for changing a close box to a wide ratio,I would just get another box. T10s are pleantyfull and still reasonable cost. Oldmics
