I want to adapt a 350 SBC to a T-5 tranny out of a S-10 2WD, does the 2.8 L and the 4.3 L use the same tranny or are they different? I was told to make sure the input shaft was not too long, do they differ between the two? Will one work and the other one not? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
T-5 from the 2.8 and the 4.3 are very different. I believe the 2.8 on is the one guys a puttin behind the Flat heads. My guess is you are wanting the five speed for "spirited driving adventures" if thats the case I would keep looking for another box. They don't last to long behind any thing with some balls.
Torque rating on 4-cyl is very low & the V6 isn't a whole bunch better behind a V8. Also the gearing is different too - the 4cyl box has like 4.10 first gear!! You don't mention what this combo is going into. If you're after the shifter location only (ie early car with top-shifter) get a V8 box & use the I4/V6 tailshaft & shifter-top to put the shifter forward.
Pictured are the two different input shafts. The short one came from an S-10 4 cylinder diesel. It was too short for my application and I could not locate a replacement shaft. However there are several of the longer shafts available and it worked better for my application. I do not have the part number for the longer shaft with me but if you need it I think I can dig it up. By the way my application was a 1953 Desoto flat 6 engine installed into a 1948 Plymouth.
