I know the Mustang T-5 seems the most mentioned but I also see the T-5 from an S-10 being talked about as well.

Is there a case where one of them is a better fit than the other?

    What is the difference?

  2. I'm not 100% sure but I think it has to do with the available adapters to the Ford bellhousing. It's been some time since I researched this but that is what I remember. :)

Something tells me I want a Mustang T-5 and get my bell housing drilled/tapped and maybe the S-10 tail shaft is desired for its placement being in a different spot in transmission.

Unless it’s new, they don’t make an adapter. Mummert modifies truck bells to make it work. It’s a deeper bellhousing than the cars, and uses the bell and the rear motor mounts. Read what will and will not work.

Nevermind. Mummert says his method of modifying the Y-block bell housing doesn't allow for use of the S-10 transmission. It should still be plenty easy to source a Mustang T-5.

I think the S10 T5 trans has a longer input shaft than the Ford T5. As it is, the Ford T5 input was 5/8" longer than the T89 four speed I had. So when I made the adapter for Ol' Furd, I took that input shaft length in mind for the finished thickness.
I think there are store bought adapters out there. I made my own because, A, I could. And 2, I had a chunk of aluminum plate on hand from another fab job. I also needed to correct a bellhousing misalignment.

There’s a plate to make the rear of a Y-Block into a Chevrolet. It’s normally use for automatics like a 200r. Speed Gems shows a kit for an automatic For a std trans I’m sure an aluminum bellhousing will fit the same holes. I’d make alignment pins.

Then the work and fabrication to use the shaft of the trans. A pilot bushing is not that hard from an oillite bar. It can be stepped for length. Back when Cadillac and Packard transmissions were used these parts were pretty common.

Modern Driveline make adapters that will work. They will tell you what trans to use. Worked for me !!

The problem using the car bellhousing is the lack of motor mounts. If you added the “steady rest rods” off a bird and a rear crossmember for the trans you could probably make it work. But getting the steady rest to clear the rams horns (if you have them, and they are far superior the log manifolds) might be a problem.

IMG_6471.jpeg IMG_6470.jpeg I know this is a model A . The nay sayers said we couldn’t use two adapters. A McBar Y block to flathead adapter and a locally made Flathead to T5 adapter. All seems to work well. Though we had a few issues with mechanical clutch ratio initially, and then went to hydraulic where we had more options to fine tune it. We were just using parts we already had on hand, for a one day whatever project and not spending money.
I would think in a F100 you could ignore the original mount rear ears and the T5 will need a dedicated trans mount crossmember any way . The original F100 trans was very short .
