I call it fourth gear because of where the syncronizer is when you shift into 4th gear. I was just trying to clarify that we are talking about the front gear, not 1st gear.

Yes, thats how the transfer of torque through the tranny happens. Thats why i was trying to clarify the above point.

Snarl, I've looked around for a higher gear set for the rear with no luck. Seems most all of these 3/4 tonners ran 4:56's In the newer '73 -'87 trucks 4:10's were common but I've found nothing better than 4:56 if I keep the orig rear housing. This is why I want to go with the T-5

I picked up my T5 at a swap meet for $50, guy said it was from a camaro. From my highly untechnical "spin the input and count the output" method, I get this:

    1: 4.25
    2: 2.5
    3: 1.5
    4: 1.0
    5: .75
    R: 3.75

I may be off a bit as it was not a precise test, but this should be pretty close.

I believe it is a NWC, based on the front-surface-sheet-metal-plug-style analysis, for those who know what that means, and it is a mechanical speedo.

No idea, but I'm planning to use it behind my stock flatty. I'm hoping for a nice low rpm highway crusing speed.

Pete - check the input shaft for size & spline count - coarse splines is V6 and fine splines is V8 (normally).

Your ratios don't look quite right. I prefer to spin the output shaft once & count the input shaft rotations when trying to figure out ratios by hand.

    Camaro V8 ratios:
    1st - 2.95 2nd - 1.94 3rd - 1.34 4th - 1.00 5th - 0.73
    Camaro V6 ratios
    1st - 3.50 2nd - 2.14 3rd - 1.39 4th - 1.00 5th - 0.78
    1st - 3.76 2nd - 2.18 3rd - 1.42 4th - 1.00 5th - 0.72

Best if you can find the tag on the rear. But you probably have the NWC 3.76 V6 version if I was just guessing based on your info...

Check the rear mounting pad - if it's late-model camaro, it should be angled & not flat.

See the tech archives or the link in my sig...

    Thanks Ernie,
It's got the angled rear mount, I'm pretty sure. I have not counted the splines, etc., and I've read some of the tech stuff here.

I agree -- looks like the closest is the 3.76 first gear, but I coulda sworn it took me 4+ turns to get that output around.

I'll check it again when I get home.

    Thanks,
    Pete

Astro Van T-5 will go on stock sbc cast-iron bellhousing, but it takes some doing. A year or so ago I posted a pic on how I adapted my v-6 WC from U-Pull on my '72 350 C-10. Been going hard for seven years or more. I had to fab an adapter that let the bottom two case bolts mate with the lower bh holes -- very simple steel bracket -- and then one top hole had to be filed out and a little bushing/washer made, the other just used an Allen screw, no prob. so far.
