i didnt get a speedo drive with my t5 and im assuming some of you guys that are using a t-5 didnt either. what is everyone doing? year and model to go get a drive and cable from?
I'm not sure of all the variations as some talk of reluctors in the tranny or differences in angle. I bought a '90 and it had an electric drive with a standard gear. I bought a mech. drive off an old 3 spd truck so I would say they are all the same. Not running but I didn't see any angle difference when I did it.
GM vehicles generally started going to electric speedo drive around the late 80s, cable prior to that. GM T5 electric speedo pulse generators come in two varieties that I'm aware of. They can have a reluctor ring on the tailshaft that generates 40 pulses per shaft revolution, or a pulse generator that mounts on the end of a gear driven unit. That type appears to interchange with a cable drive unit. The former is found on S trucks, the latter on F body cars. There may be variations but that's what I've found in my experience. Bob
no i have no drive at all and am looking for a mechanical drive that will slide into that trans (ford t-5). i have a really speedo i want to run but i need to find a way to get a drive for it thanks for the help keep it comming ken
Do you have a tailhousing, drive gear for a mechanical speedo, or electronic? they aren't that easily interchangeable. inliners.org > tech tips > the t5 tranny page > CAMARO T5 Hybrid
when I had my 91 T5 rebuilt, I had the shop install an earlier tail housing with the mechanical drive. My Model A speedo cable hooked right up to the T5 drive. Works great.
