Hey guys was just wondering as I look at my pile of parts what kind of pain in the ass it's going to be to put a t-5 or t-56 behind my 348/409? Has any one done this? I have searched the tech archives but was unsucessful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Not a huge challenge (wallet aside). McLeod makes an adapter that makes a T56 "look" like a T5, so, after that, the installation would be the same, almost. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MCL-8-207/ You will need an LS1 T56 (or a LT1 T56 with a LS1 input shaft), that McLeod adapter, and an extended pilot bushing. -or- A GM V8 T5. Both have the classic GM "Muncie" bellhousing pattern. Either one will then bolt to a "regular" bell housing. Match your pressure plate size to the flywheel, the disc to the pressure plate, and the clutch hub spline count to the transmission. Post questions if you have them. The T56 is way stronger. Also, try searching T56, instead of T-56.
I have same parts in my shop waiting. 432 stroker t56 and winters championship 9" as tight than 4.89:1. Why so big ratio? I think it might be easier drive in cruise jam. Still nice highway rpm w high gear. What dear collagues think?
Is your W rats gonna be neutral balance and same crank pattern as the 396 & 427? If yes, then the LT1 setup w/ aftermarket (or re-drilled / balanced flywheel) are a way to go. I'm not a huge fan of the adapter plate method mentioned above but it's another. 4.89 is a lot of gear but 2.66 first / .50 sixth will work with it. What code T56 did you get?
