I am just starting this project and any info on problems or pointers would be greatly appreciated. It's a 216/ three on the tree and a foot starter too. Can I use the original clutch or do I have to go to a Vega clutch disk to fit around the foot starter????

Clutch disk hub will have to match the T 5 There is an adapter to bolt the T 5 to the early small pattern bellhousing.
191851028189 in an Ebay search will find it or you can go to their website by putting the name on the adapter in a search.
You will need to swap rear ends and there you probably want to go with an S-10 4c4 3.7 rear axle or a 3.7 out of a Camaro
Someone was doing an adapter to run a T 5 with the closed drive rear but that gets pretty involved for most guys.

I have used products from these guys, and am nothing but pleased:
    http://www.hotrodworks.com/product/1940-1954-chevrolet-t5-transmission-adapter/

If you are handy, you can roll-your-own transmission mount, or buy one from them, too.

All of the clutch components can remain stock, and the foot starter can remain.

Only the splines in the middle of the clutch disc need to match the transmission input shaft, and the disc diameter match the original one.

I have used the advice of HRW:

    "Please note:

...A new clutch disk (Sachs p/n BBD4203, not included) is also required.

We also recommend using a 75” speedometer cable (NAPA p/n 615-1605, not included)."

That is a clutch disc for:

The T5 transmission will not work for you because of the torque tube Rearend . But all you need to do is swap in a open drive line rearend from a '55-'64 chevy or a ford 9". Probably the clutch too.

The aftermarket is full of them. You can pick you width, and frequently the accommodations for what wheel cover/hub cab you want to run.
