I think those 390s put out over 400 lbs of torque so you will have to be gentle with the throttle. I assumed you checked the fluid level when you put the speedo plug in. You can't drive them far without enough fluid.
very true.... just sayin since hes lookin for options, wouldnt hurt to upgrade. and t-56's can be pricey. but if you really dig you may be able to score one for a decent price

IMO, the single most important aspect of building a T5 is endplay. I find they last much longer and shift much better on the tight end of the spec. It's easy to change too...just shims under the input shaft bearing retainer. After that, a good shifter, proper lube and reasonable expectations keep 'em alive.
Cheap WC T5. Find a T-5 from a 94-98 3.8 V6 Mustang, tag number 1352-238. The input shaft is too long, so change the input to the shorter 23 tooth V8 input shaft. The 99-04 is the same trans, but with an electronic speedo output that won't accept a geared cable input. You essentially end up with the same WC transmission as the earlier V8 had with a 3.35 first gear, .72 OD. Fill it with ATF or even better, GM Synchromesh fluid.
LOL--so true. I kindly overlooked that, though. I gave him the benefit of assuming he just didn't know any better
Six-speed GM F-bodies (roughly 98-02), Vipers (at least up to '09 as I recall) and six speed 'Vettes from around '98 up to current. The 'VetteT56 is a transaxle style that uses a sync shaft between the clutch at the engine and the transmission at the back end of the car. The 'new' Camaro and Mustangs from '05(? -ish) on up also have a six-speed, but it's not a T56. Funny thing is, the 'new' Camaro manual trans uses ATF and doesn't have a dipstick - the factory calls it 'sealed' and doesn't require servicing for 100,000 miles.
There's a bunch of different T56 variants out there, the updated T56 used in the Camaro (and the GTO/Monaro, and the G8 and other Holdens, and various other applications) is called a TR6060. As with the older T56 there's a bunch of different case configurations. Note that ALL of these T56/TR6060 transmissions are much larger than a T5 or TKO. When Ford introduced the 'Coyote' four-cam 5.0 in the 2011 Mustang they also started using a 6-speed transmission from Getrag (called the "MT82") that's actually manufactured in China (yes, really) and while the box seems to be a good design they appear to have hired the same bunch of quality-control inspectors as the outfits importing the cast old-Ford axles, the problem seems to be in NVH and in high-RPM upshifts which leads one to conclude a plant manager got a good deal on duck-skin-faced synchro blocker rings and someone slipped him a kickback to take a shipment of unbalanced rotating pieces. Older (German-sourced) Getrag 6-speed designs show up in a bunch of BMWs, as well as the MkIV Supra Turbo.
