Technical T-85 shifting problems

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 46international, Mar 18, 2024.

  1. I have a Model A with a 292 and a T-85 /R11 transmission. I'm having a problem down shifting from 3rd to 2nd, the up shift into 2nd is smooth and easy but when shifting down into 2nd it is hard to get into gear. Seems like the shift collar will engage with the br*** blocking ring but the blocker ring will not slip on the cone to allow the teeth to line up. My first thought would be that the blocker ring is worn, but would a worn blocker ring just not "grip" on the cone at all? It seems like the blocker ring could be "gripping" too much and not allowing the shift collar teeth to line up with the teeth on the gear. As I understand it, when shifting, the shift collar moves toward the br*** blocker ring and captures it with the internal teeth. Then the blocker ring moves with the collar and drags on the cone area making the gear turn at the same speed so the collar can then slide over the external teeth on that gear completing the shift.
Through the shifter (aftermarket Hurst shifter) I can feel the collar slide onto what feels like the blocker ring but then it is very hard to get it to slide over the teeth on the gear itself. Before installing this transmission, I read a lot about what type of oil to use, G4 G5 G1 etc... most people said not to use anything but G1 as the others contain something that can destroy the br*** parts in the transmission. So I have G1 gear lube in it, could this be a problem? Maybe "better" oil would not let the blocker ring "stick" to the cone on the gear?
This shifting problem only happens when down shifting into 2nd gear and happens more often when down shifting at a faster speed, not when slowly rolling up to a light. And never when up shifting into 2nd. Any thoughts?

Synchro is worn out is the usual reason for it being ok on the way up but difficult on the way down. With it being worse the faster you’re going I’m pretty sure that’s it.

Try double de-clutching on the way down, if that smooths it out it’s almost certainly the synchro ring and you’ll need to pull the box and strip.

  3. OK thanks for that. Blocker ring worn out? well, that ****s but I'm sure your right.

Drill two new mounting holes in the bell housing and you can bolt a T5 in.
