Hi everyone. Today, I picked up this ‘59 Nailhead with a three speed mounted to it. I think it’ll work nice in a Model A project. The gears inside the trans look very nice. But, what can I do with the yoke on it? This is set up for a truck driveshaft. It’s not a slip yoke. Is this gearbox worth messing with?

Slip style drive shaft similar to what MOPAR products run with fixed flanges and no slip yoke

Coming out of an F-1 pickup you might want to look at the gear ratios compared to a '39 Ford box. It won't have the granny low of a truck 4 speed but it might not wind out like the earlier boxes either. With that said it probably has stronger gears and synchros compared to the early Ford box.

If what you are saying is true "it probably has stronger gears and synchros compared to the early Ford box)", I wonder why this isn't a more popular choice than a standard three speed. I have to believe that it is synchro on the top three gears, and of course, top gear is always 1:1. Is the problem the ratios on the other gears; does anybody know what they are?

The trucks had 2.99 or 2.97, 1.75, and 1.00 gear ratios, and that lower first might be helpful when installing a higher gear in the rear. Cars had 2.53 or 2.49, 1.59, and 1.00 ratios, with a 3.15 reverse for both versions.

Thanks guys. It is an F-1 three speed gearbox. It feels very solid and heavy duty when I shift it. 2nd and 3rd gears are sychro'd. I'm sure 1st gear is rather low. My rear end is a '37 with 3.75 gears. Speedway sells gears that are 3.25 ratio, which I think will make it more usable. I just hope I don't break it.
