1952-59 Ford T Bird Transmission question

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by Beep, Nov 11, 2016.

  1. OK Ford guys, I have a 57 T Bird with auto ******. The ****** shifts great, but when in reverse and if you hit the throttle just a tad hard, she shakes like a clutch slipping. Any ideas?

  2. poss:
    lose band,
    low fluid,
I will go 1 step further
set low/revers band 1-1,1/2 turns from tight
change fluid and filter ,drain the converter to it should have a drain
add fresh type F (do not use synthetic)
if it still slips in reverse under throttle it may be time for rebuild

Are your motor mounts in good shape?

The early bird engine had a mount on the front like a truck and one under the trans like a sedan. It also had steady or torque mounts on the side. Check the side torque mounts to see it if they are worn or the steel cracked like mine were.

  5. Thanks everyone. I'll look at the mounts closely and adjust the band. There are two bands right. But only one that can be adjusted from the outside and that is the 1st/Rev band,,,correct?

  6. low revers is on outside p***enger side if I remember right been a long time
intermediate is accessed through the pan
